Old news but still an indicator of the debt issues California faces. From 2017. California state and local government debt estimated to be 1 TRILLION dollars
Individual income tax returns account for 2/3 of the California state budget.
But the statement that the budget deficit is tied to the "waning fortunes of California’s wealthiest taxpayers" is total propaganda. The fact of the matter is those people are leaving the state in droves due to being overtaxed.
Now the projected budget deficit is five times more than anticipated, which means even more wealthy are leaving.
I guess Newsom's assurances that those people will never leave because the state has so much to offer them they would never consider living somewhere else -- no matter that the state milks them for every dime they can can get out of them -- was BS.
The hubris and arrogance of that guy is simply amazing.
I am honestly terrified of the thought of Gavin Newsom becoming a presidential candidate. We have had enough with Nancy in congress all these years. That family is actually worse than the Clintons
Beginning January 1, 2024, a new law in California will provide adults 26 through 49 years of age access to full scope Medi-Cal services and immigration status does not matter. All other Medi-Cal eligibility rules, including income limits, will still apply. This initiative, called the Age 26 through 49 Adult Expansion, is modeled after Senate Bill 75, the Young Adult Expansion, and the Older Adult Expansion. This latest expansion of full coverage Medi-Cal brings California closer to a healthy California for all.
If an individual without satisfactory immigration status for full coverage Medi-Cal is between 26 through 49 years old and qualifies for Medi-Cal, they will get restricted coverage now and full coverage in January 2024.
Note: All other age ranges already qualify for full coverage Medi-Cal, regardless of immigration status.
Putting things into perspective CA has the largest economy of entire USA. If it were an separate nation it would rank fifth among developed countries. That's saying something.
As of 2022, CA's liabilities are $1.6 trillion. Underfunded pensions is almost $900 billion.
The whole "if it were a separate nation thing" is very misleading. It has a large economy because it's in the United States.
If it weren't in the US, it would resemble what you see on Mexico's west coast/Baja. Pockets of nice/safe, surrounded by insane poverty and violence. The tech sector would not have been established where it is, CA would be responsible for funding their own military (which would easily exceed $100 billion/year).
First they say they need to expand MediCal because of the children.
* "Children" up to age 26?
Then last year Newsom says they need to expand MediCal because of the grandparents.
* Illegal alien grandparents? So, now the illegal aliens has an incentive to bring his grandparents with him?
And finally, we need MediCal for everyone, regardless of age and immigration status.
And BTW, since the illegal aliens work under the table, have low stated income (and pay no taxes), they always qualify for MediCal. But you poor American suckers who work at 7-Eleven and pay your taxes you do not qualify.
Yet again, we see the Democrats prefer illegal aliens to Americans.
It was all song and dance to provide jobs for community activists anyway.
