Still not a done deal but a positive sign, they have until Jan 19th to agree.

Quote:
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said Sunday they’ve agreed to spend $1.6 trillion in fiscal year 2024, in line with current spending and the caps agreed to as part of last year’s deal to raise the federal debt limit

The budget includes $886 billion for defense spending that lawmakers already agreed to last month and $773 billion for non-defense spending.
,,,,

Johnson told Republicans in a letter Sunday he would advocate for “key modifications” and “important policy riders” to the agreement, including revoking $6.1 billion in unused pandemic funds and cutting $10 billion in new funding for the Internal Revenue Service.

The agreement could include new border controls as Republicans and Democrats have been locked in negotiations over the southern border for months, with right-wing lawmakers demanding the return of some Trump-era restrictions.

still a 6 trillion budget with 2.54t deficit

funny how the article doesnt mention the 4.8t in mandatory spending (social safety net programs)

the liberal overspending has to stop.... 2 to 3t of deficit added to the debt every year is unsustainable

Cutting spending is easier said than done, do you want to get rid of social programs, republicans sure don't.

I think the Republicans do, at least most of them. It's the Democrats that don't. They would rather bankrupt my generation than be fiscally responsible.

Nope, neither party, with few exceptions, cares about the long term debt.

Spend. Spend. Spend.
Buy votes. Buy votes. Buy votes.

No, I think most of the Republicans do want to cut spending. But, I think they're more worried of the media reporting that they want to "kill Grandma" and "starve children", which is the usual diatribe the media gives when the budget is being discussed, than keeping their promise to cut spending.

To paraphrase Hemingway:

"How did your country go broke and fall apart?"

"First gradually then suddenly."

Stand by for the suddenly to kick in.

if any republican even meekly mentioned doing so, you'd be the first one to scream your head off.

Most Republicans are afraid of their own shadows, which is why the Democrats can streamroll through whatever they want, regardless of which party is in charge. The fact that they haven't presented a plan to move to a balanced budget, much less being willing to go out on a limb for any such plan, tells me what I need to know. The can will be kicked down the road, as always. Eventually we're going to run out of road to kick it down, but by then it'll be too late to fix it. Eventually we're going to have to face the music and take our medicine, because the Democrats want to spend us into oblivion and the Republicans are too timid to do anything about it.
