Only the rich are the "first triers" of new stuff

And there's a reason why everyone else waits for version 2.0

The guy in the story clearly is going to get his Capt. Virtue Signal certificate revoked.

He should know that the role of early adopters is to try to "sell" the product to the skeptics.

Lol. Enjoy becoming best friends with your tire guy, Neil!

The punchline to these EV tires is that I once drove 80,000 miles on a set of Michelin LTX M/S tires for my Suburban. Costco did all of the tire rotations during that time, and they even had the Michelin area rep contact me so he could examine the tires. It's crazy how well that Suburban drove.

It won't get much better for the tires, however. The manufacturer$ know what's up. If you've ever had a set of Toyo Proxes on a car, you know.

That's why I don't like the trend of infusing recycled plastic into the rubber of tires. As the tires wear, those microplastic particles will be/are being released onto the roadways and into the surrounding air, waterways, and environment.

As to the article, something doesn't sound right. Yes, electric vehicles weigh more, so they will go through tires quicker, regardless of how one drives. But seven thousand miles seems excessive.

We had a Mazda CX-9 for over a decade before I replaced the tires a year and a half ago, about six months before it got totaled. I don't remember the mileage but it was unusually low - probably under 60k. Only reason I replaced the tires was the original tires were getting small drying cracks on the sidewalls and I had supply chain concerns at the time. There was still plenty of tread and they still gripped just fine.

Replacing tires every 7k miles is insane.

At the time, I was doing nearly 20,000 miles annually, so the Michelins never got the sidewall cracks that tires will get as they age.

You're right, though -- to be dropping $1500 every 7,000 miles would really offset the savings on the gas. Lol.

Some tires just don't wear that well. Sometimes it's due to the design of the car ('91 Acura NSX comes to mind) or the design of the tire (Toyo Proxes, which are literally a track tire that you'll never see 7,000 miles out of).

Plus, the tire manufacturers know a good thing when they see it. There will be no 80,000 mile EV tires. Ever.
