I don't think they do that stuff out of spite. I get the whole idea at a red light, of leaving space between you and the car in front of you, in case you are rear ended. But these fools just leave twenty or thirty feet between them cuz they are inconsiderate, non-thinkers.
I sometimes leave extra space in front of me at a light so I can slow roll a little bit and try to get the best radio reception. Sometimes just a few inches makes all the difference between static and good reception.
I think a bigger problem at red lights than idling a few feet behind the other car is simply being on your smartphones and not paying attention to when the light changes.
Then depending on the intersection, people who need to turn left. Especially the timid ones who require to see no cars approaching before executing an left turn.

Years ago when we lived there and I had gotten too many speeding tickets, I had to do a traffic school class, and it was taught by a CHP officer. He told me back then that there is so much speeding that they will not bother stopping anyone unless they are going more than 10 mph over the limit.

Yup, it's a quarter wavelength of the radios station's frequency. Which for FM is about 30 inches

I was told that the error margin on the speed guns is between 5-10mph so they realistically cannot give you a ticket for anything under. I don't consider speeding going 10mph over, btw. I routinely go 20-30 over on the highways without issue from police.
In some parts of the country where there are only 2 lane roads (one for each direction) for miles and miles, you will need to pass by going into oncoming traffic or lose your mind.
If that makes you lose your mind, you need to give up your drivers license. Patience is a virtue.
Oh ya there is. Speed limit 45, big line of cars behind a truck doing 35-40 for 5 miles. Legal lane to pass as many cars as possible need to get by the truck. At 10 mph that is creeping at a jog, 20 would let a few by but not many. Far too dangerous to not punch it up to get by safely before a car comes the other way.
This is every rural road everywhere. Ever drive 10 mph? That's the difference of the proposal. People can jog that speed.
Maybe just be patient and wait for a chance to pass safely without getting up to 30mph over the speed limit.
No one jogs at 10mph. That's a 6 minute mile pace, and would be considered running.

There have been a couple times over the years that someone had stopped so far behind the car in front of them at the light that I just lost my patience. So I just pulled around and in the huge space in front of them behind the next car. Even then, there was like two or three car lengths behind me and I'm still leaving 10 ft in front. Not sure what those people were doing (maybe they were stoned or something) or what they thought about me just going around them, but... I can only take so much foolishness.
People are just weird. On the way in to the office today, I saw a person driving behind a garbage truck that was going at minimum 10 under the speed limit. There was no traffic anywhere, so this person could have easily went around the garbage truck....instead they just stayed behind it , staring at that wall of metal. I just don't get it.
