The Media Say Crime Is Going Down. Don’t Believe It: The decline in reported crimes is a function of less reporting

The media can "hide" crime via statistics but they can't "hide" the sense of danger from people when they venture into public spaces and the streets. I think people know what is really going on and the media's dishonesty only fuels further public distrust.
Not much different with stats which "prove" the economy has improved when for many it clearly it hasn't.
My brother who lives in 90272 visited me earlier this year here in n Az. He mentioned his car had been broken into four times over the past 18 months. Twice in front of his house, once while he was grocery shopping and another in Venice.
He has lived in the house for 30 years and up until several months ago always parked in the driveway. Now the car stays inside the garage.
He also said there has been an increase in "knock-knock” burglaries.
My brother loves living in Pacific Palisades, but he and his neighbors are concerned about the increase in crime. The wealthy won't be able to keep the riffraff at bay indefinitely.
However, they do have money to hire private security and will probably need it.
Pure speculation I doubt people who are the victims of violent crimes refuse to report it. People think crime is on the rise because Trump, Fox News, and other right wingers keep parroting that message. They make it sound like cities are lawless like the TV show Walking Dead, and were in a state of anarchy.
You might be able to make an argument about retail theft, but lot of that is because retail stores decided to no longer use physical force to stop shop lifters due to lawsuits. These corporation's rather pass along the cost to the consumer then risk lawsuits.
FBI has the information violent Crime has come down since 2020.

Is that measurable? One person's neighborhood Bodega owner is another person's Bin Laden. Some folks are fearful of kittens. So who's sense of danger is valid?
The reality is people are fleeing cities and the now dangerous inner suburbs for Ex-Burbs, outer, formerly, more semi rural areas to escape the crime, high taxes and poor infrastructure.
Crime is now effectively ignored by Democrat mayor's and DAs because the criminals and their supporters are Democrat voters.
So all the retailers who are making major investments in securing their items from theft and protecting their employees from violence are just doing all this for no reason?
They are making the shopping experience miserable and pushing their customers to online retailers for no reason?
Really?
You believe this?
Petit larceny is up no question, but violent crime overall is down.
Same as crime statistics hard economic data indicates otherwise. This is exactly the problem, using one persons opinion on social media rather than facts. People are going to believe what they want to believe.

What’s Wrong With the Economy? It’s You, Not the Data
Many Americans believe that the economy and their finances are worse than they really are
In The Wall Street Journal’s latest poll of swing states, 74% of respondents said inflation has moved in the wrong direction in the past year.
This assessment, which holds across all seven states, is startling, sobering—and simply not true. I’m not stating an opinion. This isn’t something on which reasonable people can disagree. If hard economic data count for anything, we can say unambiguously that inflation has moved in the right direction in the past year.
