That's just ridiculous. I provided links from Fox for those that don't trust other sources.

Here in Maine too.

The last time that I had to renew my license there was a window open for 'real ID' so I asked. The DMV person told me that they cost a bit more, and they are not required.

I carry a military ID and a US passport, so I think I am covered.

I drive, so I have to get the driver license.

I drive.

Real ID is not required here for driving.

I am told the only thing real ID would do is to allow inter-state flights.

Hmmm a bit if a different circumstance. The Aussie man applied for citizenship of another country when there was a law, since repealed, that did not allow you to apply for citizenship of another country as an Australian citizen. He lost his citizenship, because the repeal of the law was not retrospective. The similarly is that he was unaware and no one caught it, but I would think most people assume if you’ve got a US born parent you are entitled to citizenship.

Having an Australian born parent automatically grants a child born overseas Australian citizenship as long as you file the paperwork, without the child having to give up the citizenship they were born with.

Citizenship and residency laws are unnecessarily complex IMHO. The US requires all citizens and permanent residents (green card holders) to file an annual tax return if they live abroad regardless of whether they have ever resided in the US as an adult. For their entire lives.

My kid will receive an inheritance from their maternal grandmother, an Aussie, when they turn 18 next year. At the same time, they will have to lodge a return with the IRS. Australia has no estate or inheritance tax. But my kid will have to pay inheritance tax to the US government even though they don’t live there and have never worked there.

It’s just crazy. I could go on and on about the issues that come with having a dual citizen marriage and family. It is not surprising to me that things are overlooked or messed up by the vast bureaucracy one has to deal with in these matters.

If my mother and I had to do this, as well as the rest of my Florida family, then so did he. He's either lying or the whole story is BS! Seriously, I don't know anyone who is a legal driver and still has a paper license. That stuff stopped back in the late 80's/early 90's. Again, he's either lying that he didn't know he wasn't a legal citizen, or the whole story is BS!
ok Ive had enough. It is NOT mandatory that anyone has a real ID. Only necessary or a passport is good enough, if you want to fly or go into a federal bldg but not all federal bldgs. A real ID is not mandatory and will not be mandatory even when Real ID takes effect next year.

and you dont even need it to fly if you have a passport. That supercedes everything.

There's definitely something weird with the story. I have heard of people finding out that the government has them listed as deceased when they filed for social security benefits before. I have not heard of this one before.

You’d be surprised how often info can fly under radar which might explain how he never found this out before applying for jobs or licenses etc. I had an “arrest” in February 2001 that wasn’t an arrest at all. Applied for an had numerous jobs til 2018 then in 2018 when I applied for global entry the officer saw it on my record. I had to explain it to him and was approved a few hours later but remarkably not a single company I worked for saw it nor did Australia evidently when I got a work visa there from 2009-2011
