ALEXANDRIA, Va. - An ex-diplomat convicted of having sex with teenage girls in the Congo and Brazil and taping the encounters is asking a judge for leniency, claiming that cultural differences in those countries make sex with girls more acceptable.

Gons G. Nachman, 42, pleaded guilty in April to possessing child pornography after admitting that he had sex with 14- to 17-year-old girls while serving as a consular officer in Brazil and Congo and documenting the encounters in pictures and videos.

If it's not a crime where the sex took place, the U.S. has no business prosecuting him, even if a U.S. law was technically broken.

And if it is a crime where the sex took place, he should be tried there, not here.

As despicable as the behavior is, I have to agree with this comment. The only time I could support prosecution in the U.S. is if there is a law that specifically applies to Americans on official business.

Keep in mind too, the really weird nature of some of our laws. In most U.S. states the age of consent is 16--which seems perfectly reasonable. But if you go to a country where the age of consent is 14, and have sex with a 17-year-old there, you've committed a 30-year federal offense. Doesn't make a ton of sense.

In this country, minors have been charged with child pornography violations for posting their own nude pictures online!

Assuming the law applies only to diplomats or federal employees, that is reasonable.

Assuming the accuracy of the story, I'm sure he violated a serious law by sleeping with the girl whom he interviewed for a visa. Honestly, that's what I find most disturbing in this case.

Not sure what provisions are for diplomats, but no American abroad can have sex with anyone under 18, regardless of local laws. A very stupid law, but it's on the books.

If diplomats are forbidden from breaking U.S. laws in general, anywhere except on U.S. territory (i.e. embassies), that too is a very stupid law.

Just examples of typical American arrogance gone awry.

I agree with you on everything except this point. Part of a diplomat's job is to be a cultural ambassador. His violation of U.S. laws abroad, even on his own time, makes it much more difficult for him to carry out this part of his job. Diplomats enter foreign countries on official U.S. passports, unlike the private passports that you and I would use. This means that they are generally immune from prosecution in those countries. Allowing them to go unchecked anywhere could lead to some very nasty situations.

It doesn't matter that he had sex with little girls in another country, what matters is that he had films of it in this country ( child pornography) and that is illegal.

Did any one check of what this diplomat was saying was indeed correct!
In my native country the laws are different and sex with a 17 year old wouldn't be looked at as over here but a man of this age and having his job wouldn't be excepted but not prosecuted. A 14 year old, that is sick, but this guy is sick and a shouldn't have a job like this. Dirty old man!
