"decent, hard-working".
How often have you heard this? This phrase is used often as a defense, mostly when intolerance and bigotry are attacked. It's not unusual to read this phrase used by syndicated columnists or talk show hosts to describe those who smear minority groups (or individuals). As if labeling bigots as "decent, hard-working" excuses or justifies their intolerance.
Would it also mean that tolerant people are indecent and not hard-working?

Why are you assuming that the term "decent, hard working" is applied to bigots? I'd like to think of myself as decent and hard working, and while I'm not always politically correct, I don't feel that I'm a bigot.

No, I am not tired of those phrases which identify the good in people. Rarified items tend to have more value ascribed to them, not less.

When you steal billions of dollars from taxpayers for your own personal care than I do consider you to be indecent and not hard working... be you illegal or legal citizen...

What would you have people replace those words with?

What would be more, shall we say, correct ?

I've applied those terms many times to my father and grandfathers. Will continue to do so no matter who finds those terms offensive.

Yes. We should all be wary of ANYONE who uses that phrase.

I'm weary, and wary, of those who proclaim themselves as "tolerant", "open minded" and "inclusive". They can be as bigoted as their accused.
