As a general rule, you're going to have more freedom of action - in employment and life - if you have your own health insurance that is not sourced from an employer. Employers use health insurance both as an incentive and a weapon to keep employees in line. It's the old adage that when you accept the King's coin, you accept the King's terms. Don't accept the King's coin. It's more expensive in some ways, but having your own health insurance - and an account to fund it - affords a level of freedom that is hard to get otherwise.

But that sounds too complex. I prefer demanding things without thinking of the long-term consequences. I like to demand that private health become a public matter or an issue for employers and then act shocked when they start interfering with it...
