In this instance I really think it needs to be an African solution to the problem. That is not to say that we (the U.S. and West) should not apply pressure if we can. The downside to that unfortunately is that it just allows Mugabe to keep painting himself as defending Zimbabwe against western imperialism, rather than be seen as the tin pot dictator he really is. South Africa is probably the one country that could exert the most influence to reign Mugabe in but they don't seem too keen to do it. The rest of the surrounding African nations are pretty weak.
In all, it will likely play out just as Mugabe has stated; he will die before he gives in and steps down.
They wanted their independence.
They murdered the white farmers who were the backbone of the wealth of their country.
Let them rot in their crap.
Hear! Hear! They got what they wanted! Rhodesia was a going in the right direction before they took over! The White Goverment was starting to include more and more Blacks in the process before the world turned on them. We didn't help them then we shouldn't now!!!
The UK annexed Southern Rhodesia from the [British] South Africa Company in 1923. A 1961 constitution was formulated that favored whites in power. In 1965 the government unilaterally declared its independence, but the UK did not recognize the act and demanded more complete voting rights for the black African majority in the country (then called Rhodesia). UN sanctions and a guerrilla uprising finally led to free elections in 1979 and independence (as Zimbabwe) in 1980. Robert MUGABE, the nation's first prime minister, has been the country's only ruler (as president since 1987) and has dominated the country's political system since independence. His chaotic land redistribution campaign, which began in 2000, caused an exodus of white farmers, crippled the economy, and ushered in widespread shortages of basic commodities.
Doesn't seem like we have any participation in this at all. Seems like a UK issue to me.
Perhaps they were actually seeking advice (along with $$$).
