As we sat and watched the fireworks at Centennial Oympic Park tonight, the thought came into my mind that we really should make an effort to retire the Star Spangled Banner as the National Anthem and replace it with something that better describes America and is not hard to sing or remember the words to.
My choice would be America The Beautiful but there are others too including God Bless America that are great songs. What do you think?

I wouldn't want anything with god in it; that's sending the wrong message.

The Star Spangled Banner talks of war, I think it's perfect for the USA.
All war, all the time.

There would have to be really compelling reasons for discarding/retiring the Star Spangled Banner. I always get a fuzzy feeling inside when I hear it. In two hundred years I hope that song is still being played somewhere in America...

I agree, i can't see any reason why it should be retired.

I agree. The Song is mainly about our flag, but says nothing about the people, the country, values etc...I never thought it was the best choice. I vote for America the Beautiful, if only because I can't think of another good one at the moment

America The Beautiful does more for me when I hear it than the Star Spangled Banner does. Aside from tradition I see no good reason not to change it.

You won't get many takers here. Except for the fringe nuts.

I always thought the Anthem was about the victory at Baltimore, and the fact that we were able to pull through and defeat the British a second time?

Besides, if you tried to change the song you would cause all hell to break loose in the process.

I believe the Star Spangled Banner is a wonderful tribute to the agony and triumph that those people felt in their struggle to make us a free nation, and should not be changed one iota.

We do not need to go around changing all our traditions just because some group feels a given tradition is no longer relevant to them.

I don't know. I bet if we had a vote between The Star Spangled Banner and America The Beautiful, I think it would be close. I don't think that many people would be upset about such a change. Then they could sing along at the ballpark and not fake it because they cannot remember the words!
