The only immediate response is to drill for oil here in the United States and have energy independence from the Middle East. In the meantime, we can develope alternate energy sources. It is a proven fact that we have more oil here in the US than the entire Mid East. WHY NOT DRILL HERE?? There was a reason that ANWR was reserved for this specific reason. We have the technology to do this in an environmentally sound way without inturrpting the environment. Unless you people wouldn't mind paying $6-$8 a gallon for gas. Do you not realize how that is going to effect the economy?? What we pay for gas now could pay for the average Americans' entertainment such as going to a movie, dinner, vacations!! I guess the far left all wants us to live in cluttered cities living on top of each other where we have to walk or bike to work. Forget comfortable suburban living nowadays. Unless we drill for oil here now, we are doomed as a country. I am all for advanced technology in energy sources, but we need to do somethng now!! Do not listen to all those lies about how it will take 7 years for our drilling to take effect. Listen, our oil prices are based on futures, and if you didn't notice, once Bush made the speech on oil independence, did you not see gas prices drop a little? It's all speculation! Once we start, you will see a significant drop in gas prices. We could drill and refine our own oil in less than 7 years. Taxing the oil companies will not help, it will only fall back on us!!! Do your research and see how much profit an oil company makes on oil, it's not much considering all that they do to deliver this precious resource to us.

Think about how much the price of gas affects everything. From the trucks that deliver food to grocery stores to landscapers to your commute to work. It really will negatively affect the economy. The government should not even think about taxing the oil companies more but they should look into violations of anti-trust to make sure that the companies are not performing any illegal oligopoly actions. And maybe insist that the companies invest strongly in building more refineries.

I couldn't imagine what would happen to oil prices if we stated that we would start drilling right away and that plans for new refineries were announced. It would seriously benefit our entire economy.
