"Our stance in the negotiations underway with the American side will be strong ... We will not accept any memorandum of understanding that doesn't have specific dates to withdraw foreign forces from Iraq," al-Rubaie said.
He provided no details. But Ali al-Adeeb, a Shiite lawmaker and a prominent official in the prime minister's party, told The Associated Press that Iraq was linking the timetable proposal to the ongoing handover of various provinces to Iraqi control.
My guess is we'll keep a few of the provinces under our control for a while, because it's just not safe.
Oops. How will the Iraqi Occupation Supporters respond to this News? Makes the whole Nation Building thing a little more "sticky".
Iraq's prime minister said Monday his country wants some type of timetable for a withdrawal of American troops included in the deal the two countries are negotiating.
It was the first time that Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has explicitly and publicly called for a withdrawal timetable — an idea opposed by President Bush.
Iraq raises idea of timetable for US withdrawal - Yahoo! News (broken link)
Umm. This is a good thing for occupation supporters. The Iraqi government has been able to ask the US to leave for quite some time. Now that they actually have asked for a timetable, that means they probably feel confident enough that they will be able to take it from here or feel that at this point the US might be causing more problems than it is solving.

Well, it certainly is a good thing. It will be interesting to see if our government complies with the sovereign Iraqi government request and now finally agrees to set a timeline for our troop withdrawal in the upcoming negotiations.

It was a good thing 2 years ago too ... sigh. The timing, the timing, the timing. The Bush administration is rolling up the carpet.
The Iraq Army is starting to stand on its own and its good their president has enough confidence to go it alone. Apparently they have taken and held Mosul over the last couple of weeks. Looks like dubya was right and all the wailing crying wussified liberals were wrong. As things continue to improve iut should only help McCain. If the oil gets cranked up and exported the repubs keep the whitehouse in a landslide
I don't see how an "improvement" is going to help McCain. The senator from Arizona has stated many times that he wishes to continue Bush's Iraq policy, namely to stay in Iraq indefinitely. Why build 14 bases in Iraq if you intend to leave when "things get better"?
If the situation in Iraq becomes "better" how is McCain then going to justify staying there indefinitely? Especially, since the Iraqis don't want us there?
You need pipelines to move the oil, and it takes time to build them. Every time they build some lines, the natives blow them up. Besides, with practically no oil coming out of Iraq because of the war, the price for crude oil has skyrocketed. Basically, the oil producing countries, the speculators and the oil companies are making a killing by doing nothing. I fail to see how they are going to get any substantial amount of oil out of Iraq in 4-5 months.
Frankly, the only thing we've accomplished by going into Iraq is run up an incredible national debt and get a lot of people killed.
Please spare me the part about Saddam being the incarnation of the devil himself and how much he was hurting his people. We knew that before he invaded Kuwait. We did business with him. We sold him weapons and WMD. We knew he was capable and willing to use them on his own population. That argument holds absolutely no water.
Should have listened to Ron Paul and he grilled the Iraq Prime Minister last month I think that is part of it. You can thank one man RON PAUL and getting the prime minster to admit most of Iraq wants us to leave sooner then later.
I am happy the Iraqis want to take care of themselves. Now, the question is, will we be able to live with the growing alliance between Iran and Iraq, since Iraq has always been our foil to Iran?
