In a town of 2300 she knows noone with a car?
I am surrounded by small towns. Almost everyone I know grew up in a small town. Cars are everywhere. Small town kids go to the nearest bigger town/city to party, shop, see movies etc. Small town kids will not go the local privately owned pharmacy ala the one in "Its a Wonderful Life" to get their bc pills or condoms and certainly not plan B --- because to do so will alert the whole town of their business (not that the whole town doesn't know anyway, but..).
I'm sorry, it would be a pain. But it is not impossible. Not even for a single mom of two working two part time jobs with no car.
Still doesn't change the principle behind the problem.
You're right, and it should be noted that the courts, especially the lower courts, reflect their constituency's social views. Courts in conservative areas tend to rule on the conservative side, courts in more liberal states tend to decide in favor of more liberal arguments. But my scenario is also that there isn't any reasonable alternative for the customer to get their prescription filled elsewhere. And as Greatday and several others have pointed out, that's a rare circumstance.
Probably a topic for another thread, but perhaps we should simply deregulate sales of birth control and allow it to be sold as Tylenol and Advil are? It sure would solve a lot of headaches on all sides...

Taking certain forms of hormonal b.c. without being ok'd by a doctor first is pretty dangerous.

Of course she knows someone with a car. But she works two full-time jobs. And she has a house to run. Meals to prepare, floors to vacuum, clothes to wash and iron, a lawn to mow, etc. When is she supposed to go, at 2am??? And finding someone to give you a ride is easy every once in a while. It's like borrowing my phone. She's welcome to it every once in a while. But I'm not always there, and I like to have my phone available for my use, too, when I am there. And she's an adult woman. Adult woman do go to the one and only pharmacy in town to get their birth control pills because it's a small town but it's not Brigadoon trapped in some time bubble. Who cares if someone is getting birth control pills or viagra or hair-growing prescriptions?
So yes, it's a pain, and no, it's not impossible. But it takes a lot of effort and planning to make it happen. If it's an emergency like Plan B, she may not be able to make it happen since time is a factor.

She could always ask that friend to go fill it for her - I know if a friend asked me to fill a script, I would certainly do it.
Then again - if she needs this script, it seems she found enough time to get into a position of needing it!

Yikes, there's my daily dose of intolerance.
I'm more than likely younger than you, so when you go to the pharmacy to get your blood pressure medication I'll be there just to say no and laugh because I'll judge that you did it to yourself from eating too many Big Macs.

I'm sorry your neighbor is in the position that she is. However, the needs of individuals who have made poor decisions do not trump those of other individuals. I know that is not a popular theory right now, but that is what this is boiling down to, isn't it? The need of private business owner A (not an employee of a chain store, or a government employee) versus the needs of potential customers with no car or time. As much as I feel for your neighbor.....ultimately she cannot place the blame for her circumstances on business owner A for her own choices in life.

You are so nice. And I would certainly help her out, too. The entire neighborhood pitches in and tries to help this woman in little ways, no one wants to make it a point that she needs help. I do think it would be pretty humiliating, though, to have to knock on a neighbor's door and explain that I needed a prescription when there is a pharmacy within walking distance. Which would necessitate an explanation. And with the price of gas these days, people are a little more hesitant to offer rides and running into town isn't done at the drop of a hat.

If you were the owner of the pharmacy you certainly could.
Although you would be running the risk of decreased business....nonetheless, your call.

That's what I said on like page 1 or 2 of the thread. I also said that the employee of the pharmacy selling the drugs doesn't have the right to deny the pharmacy customers.
Btw, I'm not even a pharmacist; it was a joke.
