A pump 12- or 20-gauge will do a lot of damage without having to aim. Just the ka-ching of the pump will generally get the feet moving.
I completely agree.
There are several real advantages to a shotgun over a 357 in a home defense situation..
1) Aim is less important. As the story indicates, an untrained home owner is not likely to be very accurate. In this type of situation, a shotgun is more likely to hit the person being shot at.
2) A problem with the 357 is that it is so powerful. A shot might go through a wall and hit something or someone on the other side of the wall. That is a lot less likely with a shotgun.
3) Furthermore, a shot from a 357 can might a lot further than a round from a shotgun. You do not really need that range for self defense and it could be a real problem if you missed your target.
And guns do? lol. You break down a door, an alarm goes off what's the first thing a thief does? He makes a run for it. He doesn't go around your house looking for the off switch. This is common sense.
Crooks and thieves are devoid of common sense, otherwise they wouldn't steal.
Maybe you're more daring then most but the majority of common thieves will leave. Of course that's assuming they find your locks easy enough to break into in the first place.

You have to aim (or technically speaking, point) the shotgun. At indoor ranges typical expansion is less than a few inches.
A shotgun with appropriate self defense rounds will Go through just as many walls.
A shotgun really isn't the best for self defense unless the appropriate and on going training is done.
Well I keep hearing that Zimmerman should have had perfect aim and simply wounded TM - it doesn't neccesarily work that way. Also - to the anti Stand Your Ground people - do you think this woman should have been prosecuted - because that is what could happen without SYG.
Castle Doctrine = inside the home
SYG = outside the home
Thank goodness that she lives in a country that guarantees her right to defend her family with a firearm.
Sometimes that's the only thing that is effective.
OCALA – Firing a .357-caliber handgun until it was empty, an Ocala woman chased two intruders from her home in the 3800 block of Southeast 68th Street on Wednesday morning
Hunley came into the living room, saw what was happening, returned to her bedroom for a .357-caliber handgun and fired a warning shot into the ceiling.
The intruder with the nail gun ran outside, while the other one ran into a nearby bedroom. He then pointed his weapon, believed to be a small-caliber handgun, and fired at least one shot at Hunley.
Then Hunley, who is 5-foot-3, emptied her handgun, firing four shots at the intruder. The gunman ran out the front door. Neither Hunley nor her daughter were hurt during the exchange of gunfire.
A big no-nonsense Dogo Argentino or Caucasian Ovcharka would be excellent home protection, too.
Treat them with kindness and leadership, and they won't let anyone harm your family.
