I acted Chinese today! I had a good lunch at the Chinese place in midtown! I even tried to eat it with chopsticks! Yesterday I saw Earth Wind and Fire so I acted black! Tomorrow I might go to Moe's and act Mexican as a chomp down a giant burrito! Then Saturday we will order pizza and act Italian as we wolf it down! Sunday we will BBQ and act cowboy!
You are so hilarious. I guess I am acting "white," by using that word. You guys really crack me up!!! LOL
I voted no, as I don't believe people are "predisposed at act any way because of their color". There is such a thing as ethnic culture, though I hardly ever see an American fully immersed in theirs.
The idea of acting like your color is ridiculous, and as all races but the "Whites" have mainly negative stereotypes that they'd be expected to uphold, it's counterproductive. If I were Black, I wouldn't want my good credit and lack of bastard children to be attributed to me "acting White", I would want it to be attributed to the fact that I was a good person.
Poor blacks act similar to poor whites but since there are more poor blacks, certain behaviors are considered acting black.
I completely disagree with this. I think that "true colors" come out the poorer you are. Your talking trailer trash versus hood rat... two VERY culturally different types of people with clashing views of each other. Now look at black and white people with money... they get along with each other just fine.
Just for the record I do not believe that there is a thing such as "acting your race". But after years of hearing "oh, i could not tell you were black while talking to you on the phone", "You act white." and the infamous "You speak well." I thought i would pose the the question.
As pretty successful young black male I am shocked by the awe and praise I recive for doing things that are just part of being a responsible person.
This comes no just from whites, but blacks as well. And either way I find it patronizing.
I do believe people can act thier culture, but even that can be changed if one wishes to.
I think they way people act is more of a reflection of their class and not necessarily their race. Poor blacks act similar to poor whites but since there are more poor blacks, certain behaviors are considered acting black.
Not that it is on topic, but I could not let this slide.
There are many more poor whites in the US then black. There are also way more whites on welfare and public assistance. Just because the media likes showing black faces during welfare stories does not change hard stats and facts.
