Exactly.
The US has a lot of oil already...a lot more than Europe.
Unlike Europe though...Americans would rather drive Hummers than see reality or care about the planet.

I am a scientist with a considerable knowledge of geology and I do not understand the concept behind the idea that "Drilling weakens the continental shelf."

Removing oil from some formations can cause the surface to subside (become lower) but that is not caused by any "weakness".
