MIRCEA -
You obviously know a lot about the petroleum industry. Where can the rest of us go to learn about this industry and technology?
I figure if they can make diesel fuel out of Natural Gas they should also be able to make diesel and gasoline, out of road tar. I am probably wrong about the capabilities of the technology but I do respect petroleum engineers and am counting on them to make diesel and gasoline from anything.

It seems like the discussion always revolves around More Oil.

As it is now, consumption is declining. Maybe we could even conserve.
What a concept!

Even if we did drill off the coasts, assuming oil is there, whatever kind it is would go on the international market. It's not as if it would come out all refined, and be making its way directly to our vehicles.

Drilling for oil might create jobs, sure, but it has tremendous costs as well (and I am not just talking about the environment.)

The Thunder Horse deep water project cost around one billion dollars.

Thanks for a ton of information, Mircea

First, Pelosi answers to the people in California who elected her to represent the state. Republican or Democrat, it doesn't matter. In California, both parties oppose oil drilling. Gov Schwarzenegger will go directly to the courts if Congress approves oil drilling [thus stalling any action for years]. Pelosi & Schwarzenegger would be crucified if they agreed to oil drilling off California [where there are enough wells already. And no refineries have been built in decades.

Second, as we know, the cry for oil development is a mere carrot [a small rotten carrot] to hold before the people as false hope. Good tactic that the limited thinkers fall for every time.

In the case of environmental issues, California will impose stricter limits as soon as President Bush and the Dick Cheney go away. Then the nation, as usual, will follow these safeguards & also adopt global warming controls.

Are you sure that is the reason we went to the middle east? I understand that since we started ethanol with government subs our price of gas has gone up and the price of food. I understand our government pays oil companies not to drill here for environmental activist reasons and political middle east reasons. I understand that putting more oil refineries here doesnt hurt us, maybe we can bring own our miltary bases and troops from 130 countries and put them to work learning to make oil via the US government. We seem to find money to support half the world via tax dollars maybe we cut off the world with our tax dollars and support our energy at home. Also why does 80% of our oil come from Canada and Mexico and other non Arab countries. Seems to me we can get rid of the Sudia imports via the United States oil production and open up the oil reserves.

Here are the stats. ENJOY

It looks like we are conserving. (Usage of fuel is down this year from last year.)
However, we can conserve only up to a point. We still need our food transported and products manufactured and that requires oil.
