I, like Kali's Grandma, have also noticed that your question was never answered. Shoot, Penny didn't even address what my being white, male, or retired Navy had to do with any statements I made.
Bottom line is I wish the government would apologize. It won't change a darn thing. Americans had slaves. Slavery was (is) wrong. There are descendents of those slaves living today. America as in instution should apologize.
But... it still won't change a thing. There will still be ignorant white people who could care less and still be racist. There will still be blacks who want to use it as a crutch/excuse in life. What will it change? Will one person say "THAT makes it better... now let me get on with my education and life?"
But.. what the apology WILL prove is that no matter what is said or done today, there will still be those that will find some excuse not to take charge and responsibility of their own life tomorrow.
Rathagos, its kind of off topic, but I would like to address this becuase it has come up a lot. I want to know who you know that does not take responsibility for their own life? Please enlighten me on how you know these things...
To all of those saying why are "We" apologizing, why do you feel as if it is you personally apologizing? The government is what sustained slavery and practiced laws way into the 1960's that denied black americans their rights. This is not just about slavery.
My grandmothers, grandfathers, mother and father were born during the Jim Crow, Civil Rights Era so yes they witnessed discrimination and they are still alive. I do not get this whole notion that people are not still alive. Yes they are.
If you feel like you personally have nothing to aplogize for then move on, but I seriously doubt that any of you are in Congress or are going to be visiting the Capitol the day they plan for the apology. So I willl no hold you accountable.
My ancestors risked their lives to help free the slaves...
Perhaps anyone seeking an apology should find the descendants of those that did their family wrong and demand an apology from them. Half this country was against the practice...and no apology should be issued on their behalf because there isn't one to offer.

Ok and what about after slavery? Jim Crow laws were just that laws...that a lot of white people including children used and witnessed. So lets divise a plan so that we can hunt them down!
And mamabee you should read. Already stated that I do not need an apology, but if one is offered what can you or I do about it?

I guess you may read, but must leave the thinking to the rest of us. Prior to the apology being made law we can write our representatives...but to vote against it would be too politically incorrect and Al Sharpton would immediately hold a press conference labelling the "nay" voters as rascists.
This is an apology for slavery, not for various state laws.

The main reason is that as elected representatives, they do just that. Represent me. I don't want anyone apologizing on my behalf. If I have an apology to offer for something my ancestors did (which I don't), I will give it myself to whomever I feel it appropriate to give it to.

The government as a collective let this happen and they are apologizing as a representation of the government. No where I have read says that they are apologizing for individual people.
NO. Sorry. I Think the OP says Slavery and Segregation and CNN.Com has it as Slavery and Jim Crow.
How nice of you to cut the other part out. Oh no, you only stated slavery so you can say " I wasn't alive".
And go ahead and write. I want you to. So that people like you can stop assuming all blacks need an apology.
Actually, I assume that they DON'T need an apology. I wasn't alive during Jim Crow either...and I wasn't alive when cities were destroyed by riots in teh 1960's...maybe they should apologize for that?
Nope sorry. I just think its stupid that people keep saying that no one is alive that experienced slavery. Ok, I got that but this is about slavery and what took place after. Don't complain about one and forget about the other atrocities.
