Do you think a state's attorney ethics committee can properly and fairly exercise judgment on attorney ethics charges against their own committee's vice-chairman?
No. But that actually raises a wider issue - lawyers are mostly left to police themselves. State bar associations are made up of lawyers. Depending on the state, some of them may even be practicing lawyers who only serve on ethics committees on the side. They decide on reprimands and punishments for misconduct. There are cases where judgment is questionable at best.

In my state discipline is rendered through a panel of three: Two practicing lawyers and one layperson make up the hearing panel. It seems to work somewhat well.

In New Jersey, Attorney Ethics comes under the State's Supreme Court. Members of a committee are made up from a group of local lawyers. The lawyers can still work for law firms, while they are members of their local committee.
Members carry a lot of power and influence. Their law firms and them are above the law...
If you are a chairman or vice-chairman of a local committee, you are a Lawyer-God. You carry tremendous influence around the whole state, especally in the Supreme and Superior court systems.
Most licensed professions (like doctors, psychologists and nail technicians) use members of the profession to police and discipline other members. It is volunteer work. You sound like you're getting a little anti-lawyer, Cap.

I have been for over seven years now. I know there are many good/great attorneys, who take pride and honor in their profession. My hat is off to them.
New Jersey is one corrupt state!! After over seven years, the Cover-Up leads all the way to the governor's office.
