Boston Digital Productions Helps DoD Battle PTSD Stigma
The Department of Defense has launched three nationally televised public service announcements to encourage military personnel and families to seek counseling for deployment-related stress. The spots, created by Boston Digital Productions, a division of Boston Digital Editing, follow release earlier this year of a 25-minute awareness documentary entitled A Different Kind of Courage, also produced by BDP. The PSAs and documentary are components of the Mental Health Self-Assessment Program (MHSAP), a DoD-funded initiative to help deployed personnel and family members identify symptoms and access assistance before problems become serious. Director/producer Richard Tilkin stated, “Our service members and families are genuine heroes, and their personal stories are incredibly riveting. That’s why we made a creative choice to keep the camera on the people themselves, instead of the more conventional technique of cutting to b-roll. It’s about compassion and identifying with raw emotion.”
The PSAs begin airing nationwide in August. An example can be viewed at
Boston Digital Editing - Video Production - Edit Suite. A Different Kind of Courage is available free of charge to military installations, family groups, and veterans’ organizations, and can be viewed online at
Screening for Mental Health - Military Program .
Emmy award-winning director/producer Richard Tilkin led a creative team consisting of DP/editor Bob Heim, director of photography Joe Figucia and writer Rocco Giuliano.
