I wasn't trying to genaralize. Like i said before, the southerners who were on the other forum found it disrespectful and the transplants that weren't originally from the south didn't think it was a big deal.

But.. if it walks like a duck.. quacks like a duck...
Unfortunately, as I stated earlier that's not what's taught in California schools, dating myself I was born in the 70's and to this day in CA schools they teach the following as stated by a previous poster.

-Pledge of Allegiance = place hand over heart and recite pledge while looking toward U.S. flag.
-National Anthem = stand up, look toward flag (if there is one), and either sing or remain silent until song is finished.

yes, in grade school i was taught this too. but now out of school i am free to make my own choices and not sit in the timeout corner

the same could be said about church school. once kids leave the school they decide if they want to continue the teachings or just simply believe in god

And that is what I was taught in the 60s in PA.

It's not disrespectful at all. You don't know if the person is a citizen of the United States or of another country. I'm English, and I can't tell you how many nasty looks I've gotten at sports games when I stand but don't put my hand on my heart. As long as you're standing up and being quiet, I really see no problems.

Nor do I. Actually, I find it difficult to believe that people are constantly peering at you during the playing of the anthem. Most folks just look at the flag.

Perhaps you're a flamboyant dresser .... or a nudist?

Disrespectful how? Is it enough reverence to stand quietly and paying attention to the flag, not fidgeting, looking around. What about service men who stand in salute to the flag during the pledge? Are they disrespectful? No. I think not.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with standing facing the flag with your hands neatly folded behind or in front of you.

Just because you show other's how "patriotic , loyal" you are mean's nothing.

It's like wearing a flag pin or Jesus saves bumper sticker.

People enjoy putting on a show and wearing patriotism,Relegion on their sleeve.
