This is the thing that turns me off the most about this Palin woman. What is wrong with teaching science versus religion(tales and myths that cannot even be proven). If you want to teach your children that Yoda created the world and he is your personal savior, that is your personal business, no one cares. Why do these people try so desperately to push their irrational tales down people's throats? Science over fairy tales, any day!
Actually, she said both should be taught. I whole-heartedly disbelieve creationism, but if they want to teach it, go for it. A lot of people believe it, and take evolution as "views pbeing pushed down their throats" so it is only fair to present both sides and let the children make up their minds. It sure isn't the worst thing taught in schools these days.
for the record in case it was missed; I believe in evolution.
Creationism should never be taught in public school. At most, a science teacher should mention in passing that some religions believe in intelligent design, but leave it at that.
Teach both. I don't believe in the "theory" of evolution, but wtf? Why not shut eveyone up and teach both? Let the kids decide for themselves. That's what I did with my children and they believe what they will.

Palin never said science should not be taught. She never said creationism should be taught. What she said is that IF the subject of creationism comes up in class, it should be prohibited to discuss it.

I so much agree.
Our religious books were written in the light of scientific knowledge of the day. As our knowledge grows, some religions manage to adapt. It is not destroying god.
People who are anti-science are really doubting that their own religion can stand up to growing knowledge. In this respect, it is they who are the doubters.
There should not be a fight between these two.
Science deals with the material world.
Religion deals with the state of our souls and
what becomes of us after we leave our bodies.
People who choose to believe can do so even while discarding all the dogma and trappings which have surrounded spirituality in our tribal days.
Many religious people don't like the idea of church and state mixing. It can only stand, over time, to hurt religion, perhaps making grounds and salaries taxable.
I also think some 'religious' leaders, as well as some neocoms, may have insidious designs on our political system, one hand feeding the other.
I suspect, sometimes, that it is not by coincidence that shortly after the American Nazis and KKK, etc, stopped their stunts to gain more recruits, these politically active fundies sprouted up, as well as politicians who purported to be 'born again'.
Now, we find our system no longer capitalistic, but corporatistic, where large corporations and government are blended together. Mussolini defined fascism as being better called Corporatism.
I think they will fail again, but look at how far corporations have spread around the world, and the power that they weild over countries. And, consider that the only way to institute fairness in their activities would be a world governing body of some sort - the One World Government that so many of us dread.
