I joined out of boredom and curiosity (sadly thats honest), quite a few were there out of economic necessity, a few had to choose between the Army or jail, but by large the bulk were there for the GI bill. One guy was there for patriotism....never did trust that guy.
Ranges of intelligence varied widely, but that would be true of any large organization.
If you have ambition you can get a lot out of the Army. Thanks to CLEP tests I picked up two yeas of transferable college credits without setting foot in a classroom for free. The GI bill also worked out really nicely.
Didn't get to travel really though...spent almost the entire time in Texas.
its a voluntary army if your parents are rich and give you everything of course you wont enlist. but military is the only way out for many from the south like me. your assumption that they are all stupid is 100% wrong. you equate poor with stupid--- a false connection.
There really aren’t enough pejoratives to express my disgust for Lembcke.
No not nearly enough. His revisionist history is despicable.
[color=black][font=Verdana]He even has the audacity to argue that it was the political right that was at fault! My god anyone with half a brain knows the left escalated the war, then re-escalated the war and it was RICHARD NIXON that got us out of the war.
The people in the political left that was against the war (Kennedys, King , Malcolm X) was targeted by the nation security establishment for assassination ,harassment, and discreditation . JFk and RFK knew involvement in Vietnam would be a disaster since JFK congression days in the 50's visiting there during the French Indochina war. They thought the French was crazy for fighting in the Kennedys view a lost cause. It was either to anyone that wanted to be President that they better support the war or end up like JFK and the others.
As an enlisted man, I WHOLEHEARTEDLY agree with Kerry's comment. Right on the money.
As a former enlisted man, I send that. Steel on target.
