Anyone who uses slavery as an excuse to demonize Europeans has to remember who sold Africans INTO slavery in the first place - their own kin.

WE AS A NATION DO NOT NEED TO BE ASHAMED FOR ALLOWING SLAVERY. There was a time for that, when the people who actually perpetuated slavery were alive. But they're all dead now, and none of us had anything to do with slavery, so why should we take any responsibility for it?

Slavery ended over a century ago. Nobody alive today ever WAS a slave, and nobody alive today ever OWNED a slave. So why on earth should any of us feel any of the pain or guilt from wrongs committed by people long since dead, in a time long since past?

Learn from the past and live in the present. But for goodness sake, people....MOVE ON.

Slavery is horrible, and we should be ashamed as a nation of allowing it, but it's not as bad as genocide. When you're enslaved, you can still hope to be freed, sing, have a family, enjoy nature, and know you'll have a legacy (which blacks do in this country and Native Americans don't).

The Indians were basically exterminated like rodents. Could you imagine strangers from another continent telling you your way of life sucked, and you had to believe in their God, and follow their lifestyle, or die? If you DID do this, you still might die. White people embraced African American culture, and it's strong to this day, especially in music where it DOMINATES outside of rock. What do the Indians have? Place names? Casinos? Chapters in history books? That's about it. They're foreigners in their own land to people who are themselves foreigners from the other half of the world.

The only reason blacks are seen as being more oppressed is because they lived to tell about their plight. The Native Americans don't even get that privilege.
In the words of Chris Rock

Black people yelling "racism!" White people yelling "reverse racism!" Chinese people yelling "sideways racism!" And the Indians ain't yelling ****, 'cause they dead. So everybody bitching about how bad their people got it: nobody got it worse than the American Indian. Everyone needs to calm the **** down.

Both had it bad but last I looked death is worse then bad treatment. The indians land was stolen and they were murdered. The black population was brought over and forced to work and endure matreatment. Sounds like my people in Egypt. The difference is that us slaves were able to reproduce because we lived. ANSWER:INDIANS-definitely!

Well, I would say African Americans were treated worse. Native Americans were free to move if they wanted and stay at their own risk. Although this isn't justification, it is still better than being enslaved.

It was bad for everyone, just in different ways. Genocide and having your land taken away is more immediate. Kidnapping and forced labor for no pay is just a slower way to kill.

The majority of people are trying to downplay slavery .And not to downplay what native americans went through. As a group African Americans have had it worse than anyone in this country in my opinion . Chris Rock is a comedian his word isnt to be taken seriously also in my opinion . The racism towards Black people & Native Americans in the country are somewhat even at some points and in someways are not comparable . Of course this is a touchy subject and people will camouflage their own guilt that they shouldn't have in the first place (unless they are racist themselves or believe in the views of Early Racist America) by saying that Blacks didnt have it that bad , Blacks should be happy for slavery , Blacks should be happy they are not on the contininent of Africa . Some might think if you're not black or Native american you dont have an opinion that matters on it and they are obligated to that right to believe that . Being on the outside looking in is never the same as going through something. Yes Slavery has been over for over 100 years . But racism still exist and un-equality still exist between black and white . We have to look at all the facts when we discuss these subjects.

I'm going to try and be as honest and unbiased as i possibly can be and i dont mean to offend anyone black , white , brown , red or yellow . There were times that Native Americans got it worse and there were times African Americans had it worse .Reminder we are not discussing world history we are strictly discussing American History . Im not going to generalize all non black people but what i am going to say is even if the role was reversed (between native americans and african americans) there are a large potion of people that would still say Native americans had it worse than black people . Why ? Alot of people have hatred towards black people . Its the truth alot of people in this country look at black people different just because . We could do a anonymous survey and this could be proven correct . People have looked at black people as a permanent underclass simply based on the Old American Way of thinking .

I Wonder how many non african americans on this site have used the word N***ER ? not the slang term used in hip hop but the actual racist hateful word ? I can guarantee at least few of the people posting in this topic have used the word

Slavery has been over for over 100 years ago but racism/White Supremacy didnt stop, and being treated inferior didnt stop 100 years ago . Why did we need a Martin Luther King ? Why was he killed ? Why was Medgar Evers killed ? Why did black people have to sit in the back of the bus ? Why were black people wrongly accused of crimes that others committed . Why were black people looked at as 3/5 human ? Why were black people auctioned off and sold as property ? Why were black people confined to certain parts of the average american city in the earlier 20th century ? Why was it a big deal that we have a president that is half black ?This is way beyond slavery . This is about the mistreatment of Humans which still exist today . We could help Iraq and all these other countries but we couldnt get aid over to fellow Americans in the city of New Orleans ? And coincidentally the city is 70% black . That doesnt look good for your argument of getting over it . I think America has to erase all the damage they have done the black image for the pass several centuries including the last 100 years . hell including the last 30-40 years . I dont think individuals are to blame but this country should take all the blame for letting events like that happen on this land . Hell even the white house was built by the hands of slaves . Too many things in our country are reminders of people being oppressed

i could go on for days and discuss this but im waiting for a response .

this is a good post, and you make valid points. my feeling is that native americans have it the worst. there is a sports team called the redskins for crying out loud. there just aren't enough native americans to raise a stink.

Thanks , Of course America couldnt make a sports team called the Slaves . American racism towards black people has to be camouflaged and we as americans look at Native Americans as strong noble warriors that know how to survive . Now how do americans look at African Americans . America as a country gets surprised when they see a smart black man . Like it's a rarity . Now days Native Americans can integrate into the American culture and it wont be the same feeling or resentment that this country has towards black people . Is Lou Diamond Phillips , Benjamin Bratt ,Cher, Wayne Newton and countless others looked at as Native Americans or do we just look at them as people ? This country as a whole looks at all black people as black people first and then sometimes might judge them by their character . We all know its true but people would never own up to that . So the hatred for blacks is very deep rooted in the United States . America(the way we know it today and in the past) as a whole doesnt have that same hatred and resentment for native americans as opposed to black people.
