All those cities combined could fit inside New York alone. California has the 8th largeest economy in the world... Bigger than all of canada's.
One brutal winter with no heating oil would bring NYC (and the whole northeast) to it's knees. California doesn't even have enough water for their people and half of the state is a desert incapable of growing crops. Economies don't mean squat when they depend on outside resources.

And the US NOW does not have enough heating oil for it's people. It's called "imports". Japan has ABSOLUTELY NO natural resources, and they're not exactly the poorest country on Earth...
The polling so far is heavily in favor of seperation. I would be willing to bet that most people on the street would think otherwise. Seems these forums attract people with strong views from both sides - not bad, but venting is good

No, it wouldn't. There are still some people in the world who are willing to help out people in need. For the past several winters, Venezuela has donated heating oil to a million Americans in the northeastern states. Nobody in America cares enough to help out, so we get Care packages from Venezuela.
The chicken came before the egg...the parties are just reacting to two forces at work, fundies and progressives, long hairs vs. hard hats. If the parties went away, it would be the same game, different players. Just say "here's your piece of land, bible-thumpers, and here's your piece of land, tree-huggers. Now, be yourselves and run yourselves as you see fit!" and things will be allot better for both sides...

I agree to a point but I also believe that Bush has helped the divide along, a lot. Under Reagan people said liberal with an eye roll. Jokes and snide comments were made back and forth but the vitriol wasn't at the levels they are at now. HW Bush and Clinton came and went without drastic changes. Then game George. Under him liberal has become a nasty slur and anything that questioned the state of things or went against the what his admin set down was labeled unpatriotic to a degree that I don't believe we'd seen since McCarthy.
Vietnam split and divided us but during that time people continued to speak out for good and bad. For awhile in this country, under George, if you spoke out you were labeled a nut; an unpatriotic flag hating liberal extremist. To be labeled that was to lose credibility and subject yourself to heaps of backlash that could have an affect on your life. Under this admin he even managed to cow most of the media, both right and left. The divide has been taken to all new levels it seems.
Bush is on his way out now, thank god, but the antics he worked so hard to increase continue on. It seems his legacy in that regard will live on no matter what. Maybe you're right and it was just a matter of time before things escalated to this level. That doesn't make it any less disheartening to watch.
This has been suggested before. I am all for it....with the caveat that the red states do NOT bail them out in a few generations when the Blue Goons begin to look like a third world nation. And no immigration back to the prosperous red side!
Note as well that Alaska has an incident of rape 2.2 times higher that the national average. They'd fit right in with all the other states in Jesusland...excelling in rape, incest, domestic violence etc....you know, all that redneck fun.
