There have been a number of threads recently that cast doubt on the intelligence of those of us that are predominently on the right or reside in red states. Now I for one know a large number of engineers that couldn't drive a cement truck or build the plant they design. We had a saying in the Navy that it takes a Collage education to break it and a highschool education to fix it. I also know a number of tradesmen that are great at what the do but have a hard time teaching others to do it. What if any is the difference between ability and intelligence and how does this affect some of our ideas about one another???
Thanks for your input.

P.S. On a side note I bet some you collage edumacted types couldn't do my 100k per yr job

Not everyone on the red side is uneducated, so that's a big myth right there.
I personally know some brilliant people both with and without degrees. That piece of paper doesn't make you more intelligent, just more educated. IMO.

I'm live a red state, and I work for state government. Everyone I work with has either a BA or Masters Degree. Us rednecks do know where the colleges are located.

That being said, I just got a wonderful haricut last week from a young woman who didn't go to college. A very remarkable (and smart) man came to my home a few weeks ago to install a new electric line -- he didn't go to college either. The young man who also didn't go to college that works at the pool store told me the EXACT composition of chemicals to put in my pool all summer long. The man who tuned my car, the woman who altered my husband's suit, the cable man, meter reader, the guy who got rid of the bugs (ugh!) all did not go to college. If they all had, these services would not be available, and thank goodness for that!

Not everyone is a scholar. However, doing work that provides dignity and worth, and gives needed services to the public is just as important as the accountants, lawyers, teachers and other pigskin holders. You DO NOT have to be a college graduate to be smart. You DO NOT have to be a college graduate to be a hard worker or a loyal employee.

Let's not mix up intelligence with education.

Ability is something that is attained through experience. Intelligence is not.

Everybody starts out with certain innate abilities, in which they can learn to do a pretty decent job at something beyond the skill limits of most people.. But an intelligent person can learn to understand a concept, and alalyze it and refine it. Not just practice the abilities he was born with. Just because a mathemetician cannot cut your hair, does not mean that he could hever have acquired that ability. He just practiced something else. But I bet your hairdresser could not have learned to prove Fermat's last theorem. That took something called intelligence.

This is not to downplay integrity and worth. But that is something they both had, in order to rise to their level of expertise.
