What's your take on this blame game?
I don't know about the blame game but maybe this issue is associating a label ("liberal/progressive") with a political party or political platform. Liberal is usually associated with democrat but who is to define if a policy of rigourous illegal immigration enforcement is considered "liberal" because it has not traditionally been done effectively before, or "conservative" because it is reactionary in it's approach.

People define themselves as a democrat and so they label themseleves as liberal. Well would an individual in the former Soviet Union from 20 years ago that was promoting human rights, less government, and a free market be labeled as "liberal". Certainly he was progressive, but The Soviet Union, per definition, was about as far to the left as it gets. Would Hitler, when being jailed and writing "Mein Kampf" in Germany, be defined as "progressive/liberal". Again, he was promoting a government style that was about as far right as you can get, but yes by changing the political structure of Germany he was certainly progressive.

All lables must be reconsidered and taken into context with the particular issue your are discussing.

And that, my fellow poster, was my point: contextual, particular and precise!
