No I don't think The USA is heading towards socialism.
I think it's heading to Hell in a hand basket.
The American Dream shall become The American nightmare.

The pursuit of happiness shall be exposed as the pursuit of self-indulgence and self-pleasure and self-interest and self-glorification and self-defence. Basically, selfishness.

May God's left hand tap The USA. Then restore it with His hand.

It's not as black and white as that. Someone has to be the nations janitors, cashiers, etc...There is always going to be a lower class, now what happens to that lower class is the real question.

I personally beleive in Capitalism but with some socialism in it, one can't survive without the other (or at least in a good society). The key is finding a nice balance. Too much socialism and it stagnates the economy but too much capatilism would mean everyone having to fend for themselves with no safety net (some people have the beleif that they would not have any problem with that but don't realize that without these safety nets crime would go up among other things because societys problems would eventually spill into everyone).

As to the original question..We already are socialist and we have been for a very long time now (social security, unemployment, progresive tax etc..). I doubt a purely Capatilistic society could survive today, and especially a big country like the U.S.. I also don't think we are neccesarily going to become drastically more socialist even with Obama as president. So no I am not too worried.

It does though, for example innovation wouldn't happen as much.

McCain may equal a Bush 3rd term but in reality Obama equals no change. Pick your evil come Nov. 4.

YOu must be very well off then if an Obama presidency would equal higher taxes for you, or just don't have a good accountant. I think under both of their plans most people would pay lower taxes than now (correct me if I am wrong if that's not the case under McCains plan). I guess you beleive in trickel down economics?

How's about that $700 billion dollar bailout?
The $700 billion bailout was socialism (for the rich), not capitalism. Another term for the bailout is "crony capitalism", which isn't true capitalism at all.

Capitalism would have allowed the foolish speculators, flippers, and debtors to fail; and allowed the more prudent businesses and individuals to take over the economy and get it growing again.
