Methinks Americans throw around the word 'brave' too much. A lot of people on that list are 'admirable', such as Colin Powell and Clarence Thomas, but I don't know if I'd use the word 'brave'.

It takes courage to face the rejection from your family and the people you've grown up with. It takes courage to be regularly confronted on your political beliefs.
They're not demonstrating the sort of bravery that earns you a Medal of Honor, but they're demonstrating a bravery that you, apparently, don't understand because you speak so lightly of the consequences.
My wife is a black woman who is a Republican. She takes a lot of crap from blacks and her family. That she stands up and continues to assert her position is an act of bravery when a lot of people would just hide their opinions to get by.
