Any time the talking points of the American Left are put under the microscope and attempted to be analyzed under unbiased conditions, liberal members of this board immediately jump on the attack.
Because there are only three types of liberals. The uninformed, the oppressive and the stupid.
The stupid are incapable of grasping the oppression inherent in socialism. Naively believing that socialism is good, they resort to attacking in order to protect it... because they have no rational argument to rely on.
The oppressive are indifferent to reason. They want something and attack only to protect their ideology from objection. (If you can reduce an argument to personal attacks rather than ideology, then nothing can come of the exchange... which is to their advantage... Consider the "party of the little guy" smearing Joe.)
The uninformed, I find, are the only ones open to sincere exchange.

Should the "Great Debates" forum be restricted to certain posters who petition for access? Should it be open with selective banning of people who don't adhere to the "high standards" expected?
You have to have a full moderation crew capable of recognizing "high standards". My experience has been there's a liberal slant under certain conditions.
A significant item in American culture is the idea (myth) of freedom and the importance of the individual. This notion can lead to conservatives exalting the virtue of self-reliance when in fact very few are truly self-reliant and self-made. The dark side of the conservative tendency is the politics of polarization and an emphasis on the differences among Americans instead of the contrary. If you look at American history, one can see the periods when the emphasis by some on ethnic and other kinds of social differences among Americans occurs during periods of widespread disaffection with political leadership, as we have today.

An apparently also significant myth among at least one particular American subculture is that the repetition of dumb-a$$ slogans and jingles constitutes a thing called rational debate.
