It seems that most hard working middle class people struggle very hard to keep from going broke. The cost of living is steadily rising while pay rates stay the same. It even seems that in a lot of cases a college degree is the new high school degree. So is the middle-class the new low-class in the near to distant future? Your thoughts..........

As long as the middle class continues to be required to provide for many in the lower class who have no desire to provide for themselves, we'll continue to be squeezed by high tax rates. The middle class will continue to exist, but the definition of "middle class" will likely be adjusted.

The middle class are struggling hard....to keep up payments on there huge plasma TV, to pay for that 100% variable rate loan on the overpriced house, to pay off their SUV...
You get the picture. Consumerism and lack of self responsibility is the problem.
One correction to the above - housing prices are exceeding middle class affordability in many areas and that is indeed a problem.
Good post Dd714. No one wants to take responsibility for their own well-being. Governmental policies have attributed to this problem. Everyone looks toward the government for help and we know what that got the people in Louisiana and Mississippi.

It was interesting, to me, how people define middle class:
Many people have the middle class trappings: the large house, the new cars, the expensive electronics as mentioned above...but if they have no savings, no equity, and 10K in cc debt...are they really "middle class"? I'd define living paycheck-to-paycheck as "working class" no matter what the color of the collar.
You also brought up degree inflation. I agree its getting totally ridiculous. Read the classifieds lately? Companies want BAs for entry level secretarial and sales jobs. I mean, really, do you care if the receptionist scheduling your dental appt. has a college degree?
I see alot of these posts about the "middle class". It's always the same old thing...I just wish people would wake up and realize that the middle class was used to provide a deposit base for the global ambitions of US corporations.
Just like the housing bubble...it was orchestrated folks!!
