So I just went to the store to get on some things.Hit the soda section and whoop there it was, cartons of soda that seemed too small but same price.
Well after calculating what I was seeing paid more and got a 12 pack instead, but Im sure those are now just what's left and then no more 12 packs.
Started looking around, hmmm.Chip bags, same price smaller bag.Im sure if I would have scoped out other products I would see the same deal, smaller bag or just higher price.
A friend of mine who worked for Cadillac for 10 years just got laid off.One the way home before hitting the grocery store I was gonna get my oil changed at a Honda dealership but they were closed.Seems they cut back hours and laid off a few people also.
So yeah, some people might be spending away at a gambling hall, buying away on auction sites. But what I'm seeing despite gas prices coming down a little (for now) things are looking a little hairy for some and a little more expensive for everybody.
House across the street I heard last night is another one going into foreclosure.
lionking brings up a good point; little by little, things are getting more expensive, and in ways to not attract attention. Our grocery bill has gone up at least 20 percent in the last few months. It ain't very funny folks..
this isn't anything new. we all have the image of the 12oz can of beverage. not sure if anyone remember veryfine juice, but that was the vendor that served my HS. they have had 11.5 oz cans of beverage for at least 15 years. it's the way they get you. best option? simplify things. it's not hard to make bread and it sure is hell of a lot easier. people are so hungry for shortcuts in this country!
I think part of it is that the value of the dollar has gone down. if our dollar is worth less, it buys less. the inflation tax.

This type of "marketing" has been going on for decades. Candy bars have a long history of shrinking, the 'pound' can of coffee, once a full pound, then 14, then 13.5, then 12, and I have even seen an 11oz can.

Wonder what 09 and 2010 gonna be like.
Two nearby Ford dealerships just closed down, a Ford and a Chevy dealership earlier this summer. The train has come off the tracks, but the train wreck is going to continue for a long time, and it is going to be a bumpy ride with casualties.
As an American student abroad in Australia, let me just say be glad how good you have it! Gas is over $5.50/gallon here, and food is at least 25% more expensive because everything has to be imported. You don't know sucky until you pay $7.50 for a freaking box of cereal!
