Democracy: Government by the people; government in which the supreme power is retained by the people and exercised by representation, as in a republic. Opposed to aristocracy.
Aristocracy: Rule by the best; government by a relatively small, privileged class; those regarded as superior to the rest of the community, as in rank, fortune, or intellect.

Republican: Favoring the principles of a Republic; one of the two great parties since 1856, originally made up from those opposed to the extension of slavery, especially Freesoilers and many Whigs, Democrats, and Knownothings.
Freesoiler: Advocating the non-extension of slavery.
Whig: One of a political party of liberal tendencies which grew up in the 17th century and later became the Liberal party; a supporter of the American Revolution; opposed to Democrats.
Knownothing: An ignoramous; a member of a political party which aimed to render the foreign-born population politically powerless. Its members replied "I don't know" to questions about the party.
