I went into a 7-11 type place, waited in line for 10 minutes, and when I couldn't speak Spanish i was shooed away from the line and ignored.
I also went to a little cafe to get my Aunt and I some 'Cuban Coffee'.
The lady who waited on me spoke no English and I spoke no Spanish.
It took a couple of minutes, but we negotiated my order. She even
gave me a cookie while I waited. When I paid for my order, I gave
her a tip, because she was so kind. She blushed and it was a very touching moment.
I think I will always remember that little meeting of cultures. Racism is stupid![/quote]
Reverse racism? yes, as a caucasian/white man, I have experienced that.
Let me say this....I do not believe any white person(which, again, I am white, male, middleaged)can know what it is like to be black, a person of color. It is one thing to have a "experience". It is quite another to live a lifetime of it.
And when we, as whites, act so nondiscriminatory(SP?)and then wonder why blacks/people of color don't react with the same warmth or depth, we are not recognizing that lifetime of color. Sometimes I wonder if our efforts to be so politically correct, claiming to be colorblind, just come across as patronizing bs. Thinking outloud here...
