I would think that the best chance for meaningful near term impacts would be continued improvements in battery support in hybrids. If we can consistently get 50 plus MPG from a vehicle that can reasonably seat 4 or 5 folks along with a couple of suitcases, for a price near our gas engines today, I think we are doing well.

A totally sun-powered car is doubtful with today's technology. With advances in phot-voltaic cell technology I would guess a solar assisted electric vehicle is possible. I believe there are already some simple uses such as using solar powered fans to ventilate parked vehicles, solar chargers are also being used to keep batteries charged when cars are parked at seaports.

We need to remember that wind energy, in the final analysis, is generated by the sun, it's gonna be here a while. The more sources of energy we explore the better off we'll be.
