I, the guy who supported & voted for McGovern & Carter twice and every Democrat governor until Patton in Kentucky want to hear from a liberal exactly what your goals are. No spin please. Tell me how you pay for your objectives and how your grand-children's children will see the world if your goals are achieved.

Please don't react to my question, please stop, think and rethink before you reply. I would enjoy a genuine conversation.

This will be interesting, I did not know liberals had goals. Socialism maybe?

I can't give you a genuine conversation, because I have too much going on today. But I can give you at least a top line answer from this "liberal"-- actually, I'm a pretty mixed bag.

My first goal is to get America back to the Constitution via civil liberties/privacy laws. Compliance w/the Geneva Convention would be nice and acting more like a world leader and less like a world bully would be even better.

I would like it if citizens of different parties backstabbed each other less, but maybe that's just a pendulum that swings throughout history.

I'm astonished that decades of politicians have promised better education and no one has really moved the needle. Global competition-wise and crime/welfare-wise, that keeps biting us in the butt. So we need to REALLY address it.

I don't know how other countries pay for more universal healthcare, but I know they do. We should do the same. As part of that, we need to emphasize more preventative care-- obesity, smoking, etc. should be a priority because that's where the ultimate bill is going to be the biggest. Unfortunately, no one "makes" money on preventative care, so this country has never made it a priority.

We need to act as if Social Security has already failed and find a solution today. Have no idea what the solution would be, I just feel like no one is really working on it and its the 800 lb gorilla in the room.

I do believe in Global Climate Decay ("Global Warming" is the most useless, confusing, counterproductive label ever). Above EVERYTHING else, addressing it needs to be a priority, otherwise everything else is moot.

Global warming/green can be a new productive industry in America.

If I were President, I'd help pay for things by eliminating some of the space program, closing military bases in "non-active" countries (how would you feel if Germany or the Philippines had a military base here?)* Re-examining corporate subsidies, attacking (yes, McCain) earmark spending, and requiring any citizen who receives government money to "pay it back in kind" with some form of civil service, from filling potholes to tutoring in the schools.

This is a shallow, early-morning response, but it's what rose to the surface in my addled brain. Maybe enough there to give you some insight. Maybe not. Others will do better perhaps.

*Understand these examples are unresearched, but I'm confident there is some dead weight overseas that is doing us more harm than good.

excellent post and I agree.

I will also add that as a liberal I want to see us move away from foreign oil dependence and focus on new sources of energy. U.S is very innovative when not stifled by politics (ie: those that would lose money from a new system of energy blocking things in the gov't with their lobbying). We have the ability to lead this world out of the old centuries ways and into the new century .. and also stimulate our economy with it!

Both of the above writers are examples of the confusion I have. I don't know who you voted for, but a Congress with lower poll ratings than President Bush, I don't understand.

I honestly wish we could get true integrity and trust back into our government, but with the size of the government, there will always be graft.

It seems to me that you asked a question, and you received a couple of very thoughtful, respectful responses. However, you are claiming to still have "confusion", what more can be said? As far as getting true integrity and trust back into the government, I think Obama is definitely a step in the right direction.

Why the cheap shots so early in the day? Is respectful conversation too much to ask?

Is that a cheap shot? Please don't turn this thread into any form of bashing or hurt feelings. I am not attempting to judge or be judged, but hopefully, we can ask questions, get honest informed opinion answers, add history, some hope, and maybe we can find a way to ultimately lead this forum to peace and justice for all. Maybe we can find hope for our nation, too.

This is interesting indeed. I always thought conservatives never had any manners and you are clear proof of that.

So the guy is confused and asked for clarification. Got some great responses which were very clear to me, and which I wholeheartedly agree with.

But then guy says he is still confused. Which in turn makes me confused. I wonder what the confused guys goals and objectives are?

No spin, please.
