The best thing that could happen to America's economy would be if everybody bought nothing at all for Christmas gifts, and used all the money to pay down their credit card balances instead. America's gift to ourselves, a gift that keeps on giving.
I can afford to buy this Christmas but I'm not in the mood and I'm more worried about saving for when things get really bad the next few years. The government screwed me( dems and repubs alike) with the market meltdown so I'm not going to bail out retailers by buying crap I don't need. I never did and I won't start now.
Clothes gift cards for the family, toys for tots, the salvation army. That's it.
IF I make any large purchase, it will be a gun. I'll cling to it and take it to church in case any outsiders show up.
As far as holiday shopping....yeah, I can see that.
I don't plan on buying a lot of gifts and I'm not asking for much. I feel pretty fourtunate right now. Anything else is just extra.
All my needs are taken care of and my wants are fulfilled slowly but surely.
I agree . . My basic needs are met , and this makes me in better shape than a lot of people right now. It is frightening what is going on in our nation right now.

That's exactly right. It's time to get back into spending only with cash. Using credit to shop is foolish.

Most of what people buy isn't made in the USA so a big cut in spending will only help the trade gaps. What in the mall is made in the USA, made by Americans?
I think this is going to be a super Christmas. Every Christmas is a great Christmas.
And if you judge Christmas by the economy, it will still be a great Christmas. We live about 1/2 mile from the railroad track and I noticed the more trains the better the economy. Yesterday and today, they are rolling. Love that train whistle most of the time.

Agree 100%
America has been on a spending orgy for the past 5 years or so. Buying the biggest McMansions with no money down and credit scores in the 500s; driving the biggest gas guzzling SUVs (matching for him and her) buying gas on credit and filling the SUVs with Jimmy Choos, Coach bags, iPhones and plasma TVs.
Why buy gifts for a child too young to even know? Is it for the parents?
Well, only if the parents want to play with infant toys and try fitting into baby clothes.
