Gun Facts

There's some interesting information on this website. The US leads the way, unfortunately.

In 1999, there were 28,874 gun-related deaths in the United States - over 80 deaths every day. (Source: Hoyert DL, Arias E, Smith BL, Murphy SL, Kochanek, KD. Deaths: Final Data for 1999. National Vital Statistics Reports. 2001;49 (8).) from the link.

We have many laws to govern and control guns. The issue isn't Joe citizen who buys a weapon legally. The issue is joe the criminal who buys a gun illegally. Most of us gun owners act responsibly and never run afoul of the law. Punishing the law abiding citizen is never the answer. The answer is to enforce the standing laws and punish the violators with extreme prejudice. Ie lock them up and never set them free again.
Gun shops: They need to be held accountable. If they sell a weapon illegally and it does happen they should loose their licence permenantly. Not to mention hefty fines, and jail time.
For those who are caught selling without a lic. ie on the street to thugs? They should get equal punishment as those who commit the violent crime...
Consequences when they are real will work.

If you want to have freedom on guns, I want to be able to carry several live grenades on me in public. I also would like to be able to carry pipe bombs around in a trenchcoat those are the arms I choose to bear (insert sarcasm here)

I'm fine with people having some protection, but unfortunately there are irresponsible owners and some controls need to be put in place.

When I was 12 I had a paper route, placed the paper in the box where the owner liked it, he came out drunk pointing a gun at me laughing and trying to chase me off.

Does someone like that deserve the right to own a gun? If not what are we gonna do about it?

I suppose its my own fault for not having my own gun on me to protect myself though, right?

Maybe we can ban crime first. Then look at banning guns once the crime ban is proven 100% successful.

tnbound, look at the gun stats that I posted. Without access to guns, crime becomes less depersonalized, less violent, less period.

Let's try banning the guns and see how it affects crime first. I think that's the way I'd pursue your post. Nothing is 100% effective so that's a strawman argument. Try looking at the % that crime decreases. That's realistic.

Gun crime is increasing in the UK, yet guns are severely restricted.

How about we forget trying to curb this or that crime and severely punish the guilty party?

As long as due process is involved, I'm okay with that. Let's decriminalize pot first.
I know people who got 20 years for 1 oz or less in the 1970s; lost touch. Wonder how much time they served for a completely non-violent "crime".

I'd really love to see white collar criminals get the book thrown at them.

I would love to see criminals have the book thrown at them,I couldn't care less about the color of their collar.

As to drug laws,I care little about what others do in this regard,as long as I am not made to pay for their foolishness in any way.

Words of wisdom....
Lets not forget that cities with the most restrictive gun laws also happen to have the highest crime..
Punish the criminal not the law abiding citizen.
Most Libs love to pound the honest guys and in turn make excuses for the nonproductive people.
Welfare, criminals,illegals etc.

To me, Gun Control = hitting your target.

The US Constitution states that: "A well-regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. "

This means that people (who make up the militias to defend the USA in times of need) has a RIGHT (not a priviledge) to keep and bear arms.

Don't forget that America was freed by armed citizens. The British were doing the gun ban thing and that is why the Founding Fathers made sure the people have a right to keep and bear arms.
