JGY, the Pledge is less than half the age of our country. Having God in it is less than half the age of the Pledge. 23% of the life of our country. Hardly part of the intent of the founders!
Ya, "under god" is only 54 years old!! 1954, Eisenhower signed it into law (unconstitutionally) because 'evil atheistic communists' wouldn't say it, and then they could discriminate against an atheist by calling him a communist (Or discriminate against a communist just because of political views).
There is nothing good about the "under god" phrase in the pledge; it is unconstitutional and its purpose is McCarthyist.
McCarthyism served a purpose during that time, and communists were out to get us, they did what they deemed necessary to defend our country.
Like our modern patriot act?
Besides, communists (or atheists, which are the real targets of the phrase) aren't "out to get us" anymore. The current scare tactic is 'crazy allah bombers'. We need to dump McCarthyism and everything that's still tainted by it.
Well it seems to me by the hate spewed by the atheists that you are indeed out to "get us"
And I as an atheist can interpret hate spewed by believers to mean that they are out to "get us" as well. And if I were gay, it would be twofold. But debate alone is not hate; it usually takes prejudice or personal attacks as well. And merely debating an idea is neither.
McCarthyism served a purpose during that time, and communists were out to get us, they did what they deemed necessary to defend our country.
"Slavery served a purpose during that time..."
"Having women not vote served a purpose during that time..."
"The witch trials in Salem served a purpose during that time..."
"The forced encampment of the Japanese served a purpose during that time..."
Hey, JGY?
If you believe that McCarthyism served a POSITIVE purpose at any point in this country's history, then you don't understand either this country or McCarthyism.
The number of innocent people whose lives were ruined by that man and his methods and madness was high - too high to countenance with "served a purpose."
So, try telling us what purpose it served. Tell us how many threats to the country it uncovered. It was worse than the worst elements of the Patriot Act, or at least competitive. Worse simply because it was more widespread and accepted.
And somehow it doesn't offend so many Americans like you that this violates the First Amendment of the Constitution. Where is your patriotism to this country and its foundational documents?
McCarthyism served a purpose during that time, and communists were out to get us, they did what they deemed necessary to defend our country.
HUH? How did persecuting innocent Americans defend us against Communism?
