When Bill Richardson was named secretary of commerce the CNN commentators made a big deal about the fact that he had shaved his beard before accepting the post. This got me thinking. There have been very few politicians with facial hair since the 1800's. Here's an article that addresses the issue. Commentary: Bearded US politicians, past and present - by Dan Weaver - Helium What do you think? Would you vote for a politician with a beard? Why or why not.
Just my opinion-politicians are supposed to be clean-cut looking?
Yes-I'd vote for one if I thought he was the best candidate (I almost said he/she to be PC but then realized how silly that was!).
It's because they are all really women in disguise. Very good disguises.
In reality, it's probably because of the connotation of being "dirty" if not clean-shaven. In politics, appearances are a big deal. Not many are going to vote for the guy who's got a face full of fur, shoulder length greasy hair, and ripped jeans.

Good point. He'd probably fare all right if he had a small mustache or goatee, but not if he looked sloppy and unkept like Michael Moore!
I wish Bill Richardson would grow back his Mexican beard, that way he would fit in with all the other wrestlers in the Mexican Wrestling Federation. I can't wat to see him jump into the ring in Guadalajara!
They would look more "wise" and/or at the very least, more "manly". I have never been able to figure out why on earth "clean cut" (over time) became the outward symbol for "moral", "wise", and "upstanding citizen we can vote for".
Right now, the facial hair might be too much of a reminder of middle east folks.
It's not really the fashion to have full beards, anyway - I very rarely see it in everyday life, so maybe the same carries true in politics.

This could be a chicken-egg starter. Are beards or defined shadows/stubble simply unfashinable ... or oppressed by society/work standards? Or both?
