Yes, if the US cared as much for its veterans and those on duty, you might have a case. Right now, it would make no sense to join the military and go into a combat zone with no protection.

Or the Peace Corps. Remember the Peace Corps? Six percent of Peace Corps volunteers are over age 50.

Kind of hard to go abroad to the Peace Corps if you have a family.

a truly free nation which respects its citizens would never treat its youth as a disposable commodity. As Ben Franklin said there is no such thing as a good war, nor a bad peace. The government takes so much disposable income out of the pockets of its citizens and spends it on the military, it has warped the free markets. It is time to cut military spending by at least 50% and put that money back in the wallets of intelligent consumers who will support local enterprise and creating more meaningful, productive and less violent jobs at home.

My point was that neither option is feasible for those forty plus.........

That might work in the great white north... you have the American military to protect you.........

It might be feasible for those lucky enough not to have kids at all or those whose kids have moved out already.

There's a news video on Yahoo talking about how more people enlist in the military in tough economic times...
