DETROIT (Reuters) – General Motors Corp on Monday unveiled an unusually frank advertisement acknowledging it had "disappointed" and sometimes even "betrayed" American consumers as it lobbies to clinch the federal aid it needs to stay afloat into next month.

The print advertisement marked a sharp break from GM's public stance of just several weeks ago when it sought to justify its bid for a U.S. government on the grounds that the credit crisis had undermined its business in ways executives could never have foreseen.

A capitalist "Come to Jesus" moment. Remarkable. It's like they took a page out of Japanese business execs, too bad it took them so long.

I can't believe they admitted that they are going down the tube because they lost touch with mainstream consumer needs, and they are still getting a bail out.

In my book that is just bad business and this recession is only adding to the mess they already created for themselves. They not only betrayed Americans, but their employees who may still lose their jobs because of this lack of judgment.

There is blame all around.

The employees bear some of the blame. I actually dont begrudge 27 bucks and hour. People earning a good wage is a good thing.

"Job banks", covering retirees health insurance (if yer gone yer gone), 0 deductible health insurance, and huge pensions are things that turn 27 dollar an hour employees into 75 dollar an hour employees. These need to go.

Its a PR move.

PR BS. Talk is cheap. Where's the beef? Admit the EV-1 was a killed because SUVs were more profitable in the short term and that's all you cared about. But now you've seen the light and will become the industry leader in EVs. That's a start.

"disappointed" and "betrayed" by American consumer/customers

Their customer service brought on a huge part of this

The funniest part is politicians asking for them to be accountable
and this comes from government experience setting such a fine
example on how this is done
