Do you think it's wrong that someone who is 18 and has a girlfriend (or boyfriend) that is 17 get's charged with statutory rape because of the partners parents and is labeled as a sex offender for the rest of their lives? I've known innocent kids who were charged simply because their partners parents did not like them or did not approve of their relationship and they were charged and grouped with the rest of the perverts that are sexual offenders. Do you think there should be some leniency in these types of cases or do you think that they should just have the book thrown at them?

I think the whole sex crime registry is more than a bit suspect.

I think it's awful that they are put in league with monsters! And all because of mean spirited people!

17 is of legal age, she must be younger. But yes, it's outright destroying peoples lives--forever! They will be labeled a sex offender for the rest of their lives and it's ----ed up. I've heard of so many such cases.

And I don't know what to think about all the little 14, 15, 16 year olds who lie to 18, 19, 20+ year olds about their age--and they can pass for 18 easily--getting them arrested for statutory rape. I know one who's in jail for two years now and he'll be labeled a sex offender for the rest of his life b'c he was 24 and she told him she was 18. He was in love with her and he thougth she with him but when the dad found out, she wouldn't admit she lied about her age and even used a fake id to get in to certain places. If I were a guy I think I'd date older women than myself or stay celebate.

There are some states where the age of consent is 18, California being one.

The registry is a bad idea in general, but especially in cases like the ones the OP mentions. But it's worse than that. There was a 12 and a 13 year old in Utah who were charged with raping each other and became convicted felons.

Here is a site that should be read and forwarded widely:

Ethical Treatment for All Youth

Did you know that a drunk taking a leak in a dark parking lot who is seen by a second party upon conviction is also labeled a sex offender for life.

Or how about a 16 year old who takes a risque photo of his girlfriend and is caught and charged with child porno..........

how about the drunk adult woman who shows her boobs at a public park and is so charged for life...........

The intent of the law was to protect the children from the monsters and not to go after everything but the monsters................or am I just blind........................

By the way, retired cop and I have seen each of those as sex crimes with the attendent registration requirements here in Oklahoma...............

I think every case should be judged on a case by case basis.
I think an 18 year old with the 17 year old gf shouldn't be charged with a crime.

Agreed. But I also think the 18-year old should know that with the law being what it is, s/he should be smart and not take chances by engaging in sexual activity with a minor. Of course, that's probably easier said than done...

There is the 4 year rule that you people keep forgetting.

Can anybody expand on that (4 year rule)?

An age-buffer law exists in some states and not others. In states where it exists, it may be 2 years, 4 years or 5 years. So, you'll have to expand on what 4-year rule you mean.
