Bleeding Heart Tightwads

By NICHOLAS D. KRISTOF Published: December 20, 2008

Liberals show tremendous compassion in pushing for generous government spending to help the neediest people at home and abroad. Yet when it comes to individual contributions to charitable causes, liberals are cheapskates.

Arthur Brooks, the author of a book on donors to charity, “Who Really Cares,” cites data that households headed by conservatives give 30 percent more to charity than households headed by liberals. A study by Google found an even greater disproportion: average annual contributions reported by conservatives were almost double those of liberals.

The upshot is that Democrats, who speak passionately about the hungry and homeless, personally fork over less money to charity than Republicans — the ones who try to cut health insurance for children.

Yeah, you're right about your post. republicans/conservatives saw their way to give charity/compassion/welfare/and contributions to wall street, that just makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

While I give to charities, I also believe that my considerable tax dollars should also be used as a social safety net. And that is why I don't complain about my taxes being used for this purpose.

The study is misleading because a large part of the charity that conservatives give to is to the church. Conservatives tend to be church members and attend services every Sunday. Liberals are less into organized religion and therefore donate less money to religious institutions. I suspect that if the study were limited to non or quasi religious organizations- such as United Way, Salvation Army, Food Bank, Animal Shelter, Scholarships that liberals would in fact give more.

Exactly. I was going to post exactly this. It's hard for liberals to compete when conservatives are "encouraged" every Sunday in church to give up 10% of their wages.

I'm even happier that you think that the democratic leadership that pushed the bailout down everybodies throats actually were republicans -- do you think that Obama knows?

Actually, scratch Salvation Army though. They're called Salvation Army because they're "God's army" and they don't hire gay people. So I'm sure Christians love to donate there. I personally will never set foot in one of those places again after reading about the way they operate. And since when is a corporation that's worth over $2 billion not taxed? That's a joke.
