And, look at those nutty Kansas church people who showed up at military funerals all over the country to protest, because "America accepts gays", so they were protesting America.
It sure doesn't help to have a war going on about gay marriage, either - if everyone would just mind their own business and not care who anyone else marries, nobody would think about it. It just adds fuel to the fire of those who are sickos already.
So maybe people should stop whining about the people in California actually speaking their mind.
In my opinion, regarding hate crimes if a black person is murdered because he is black, Jewish guy is murdered because he is Jewish, gay guy is murdered because he is gay...a person is raped because they are gay...being singled out because of a nationality, ethinicity, sexual preference..those are hate crimes and both the crime elements of that crime should be punished. It is all egregious behavior.
What if a rich guy is singled out because he has money and a poor person is pissed that someone has so much money while he has none, so he angrily attacks and robs the rich man? Is that a hate crime?
Hate crime laws are total bull****. They are just one step in the short staircase leading to thought police.
If someone targets me for a specific reason (being white, whatver) and beats me within inches of my life, why would that be a bigger deal than if someone just snapped and I happened to be the person they snapped on and they beat me withing inches of my life? IT SHOULD NOT MATTER. The result was the same. Punish the crime the same.

Uh no...they should not.
If they feel it is wrong, then they have every right to speak up against it. Just like how these Christians whine and cry about the war on "Christmas".
Hate crimes are discriminatory, that's why they are hate crimes; are the laws discriminatory, I don't think so...are laws biased and unfair, many times, but discriminatory is not a word I would use when categorizing hate crime laws.
While I don't believe it fair to say that those who are against homosexuals would condone this type of violence, I also don't believe it is right to ignore the influence of gay bashers that begat this crime. If you hear enough times that a certain person is 'unnatural' or 'committing sins against god and nature' due soley to their sexuality....well, don't be surprised if someone doesn't take you up on the idea that said person is less then human.
Good post...yes, the targeting of certain groups , treating them as "less than " citizens, less than humans, is the precursor of violence....

So if a gang of white youth were to do the exact same crime to a white, straight female, should it be prosecuted as a lesser crime as sexual orientation, race, etc was not a motivating factor in the crime? This is what troubles me most about so-called hate crimes - any crime perpetuated against another human being is a hate crime not just those committed against minorities or gays.
