I believe in a mixture of the two. In fact, America has a mixture of the two. Most European countries slide more to the left (socialism) while America is center-right. Believe it or not, but so many programs exist in the United States to help people out. Many buffers exist.
I would like to see more improvements made on cheapening health care, even if that means raising taxes. I would prefer that funds be allocated from other sources though, instead of hurting Americans even more. Everyone deserves the right to life though, and you shouldn't have to sell your house or go bankrupt to pay for health care.
I'm more centrist when it comes to capitalism/socialism. I believe in a healthy mixture of both ideas.
Even Russia and China have embraced capitalism. Cuba and Venezuala are the only countries that practice communism. How's that working out. Oh, and with oil prices now at $37 per barrel you don't hear much from Chavez anymore. Communism destroys all motivation to work and succeed. It goes against human nature and forces the dictators like Castro to use fear as motivation.
I purpose we move away from those labels as people from both side get offended by the use of the other.
We should ignore if it seems like capitalism or socialism or communism whatever and just do what works. If no corporate taxes attracts capital back into the country then do it. If solving the medicare problem require universal health care or a mixture of universal and private then do it.
Both are obviously good because China is moving towards more capitalist type practices and we are moving more towards socialism. In a world with pretty much a 1 world economy (which is obvious by the present financial problems and how our problem brought the rest of the world down with it) it's going to be hard not to have a mix of both as we try to compete around the world.

I think too many Americans are advocating for more socialism nievely. They don't seem to be aware of the problems occuring in some of the scandinavian and other western European countries related to their big gov't systems. Sweden and France are seeing the need to cut taxes and Germany has had to cut welfare.
The freeze is designed to help the government deal with a substantial shortfall in state pension funds. The shortfall has been caused by an ever-ageing population and fewer contributions to the fund due to high unemployment...
