I give charity by giving my time, not money. I am a college student, so giving money isn't too feasible for me, but I don't think one has to donate money to be charitable. I frequently volunteer to work at food pantries, animal shelters, Church's, etc. I must have clocked in at least 60 hours this year alone. Tonight I am going to be working at a Church from 8-2, to celebrate the New Year with a lot of homeless in the community.
I believe conservatives donate more money. I think it falls more under religion than anything though.
That's great AaronK. I need to do the same thing. How do I start and who do I contact?
Actually, what saganista says is discussed and supported by Brooks' study that demonstrates conservatives donate higher proportions of their incomes than liberals.
He goes on to say that a big part of that reason is the way both sides view charity and the role of the government vs the individual.
Liberals tend to favor the government intervetion, while conservatives tend to see themselves and their communities as those who are responsible for the less fortunate.
Defining a charity is the most difficult part of this determination. Is your church a charity if they use half their donations to send clothing to Africa, and the other half to repair the church roof? Is an art museum or public broadcasting a charity?
Well, by the IRS definition, a charity is a non-profit organization. I have read (sorry, no links right now) that higher income people tend to give more to arts organizations and middle and lower income people tend to give to social service type groups (food banks, etc). There is some website that ranks charities in order of how much they spend on administration, etc.
who is better at giving to charity republicans or democrats?? give me some links to support your opinion, thanks
what do you think about al gore only giving $333 one year?
We did this about two months ago. I'm not going to look for my old posts but conservatives give more than liberals, Republicans more than Democrats, Southerners and Mid Westerners more than North Easterners and Westerners and Born-again Christians more than any other group including Roman Catholics.
if you count giving money to your church because your church helps the poor (or says they do) then I'd have to say conservatives...
but what kind of douchebag would want to keep track? the ends don't justify the means....
I know I give more per earnings than Joe Biden. Its been documented that conservatives give more than liberals, but working class/middle class give more per earnings than the more affluent. The government is definitely not as well equipped to help those in need as efficiently as faith based organizations.
“[Americans] are regularly told by politicians and the media, that America is the world's most generous nation. This is one of the most conventional pieces of 'knowledgeable ignorance'. According to the OECD, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, the US gave between $6 and $15 billion in foreign aid in the period between 1995 and 1999. In absolute terms, Japan gives more than the US, between $9 and $15 billion in the same period. But the absolute figures are less significant than the proportion of gross domestic product (GDP, or national wealth) that a country devotes to foreign aid. On that league table, the US ranks twenty-second of the 22 most developed nations. As former President Jimmy Carter commented: 'We are the stingiest nation of all'. Denmark is top of the table, giving 1.01% of GDP, while the US manages just 0.1%. The United Nations has long established the target of 0.7% GDP for development assistance, although only four countries actually achieve this: Denmark, 1.01%; Norway, 0.91%; the Netherlands, 0.79%; Sweden, 0.7%. Apart from being the least generous nation, the US is highly selective in who receives its aid. Over 50% of its aid budget is spent on middle-income countries in the Middle East, with Israel being the recipient of the largest single share.”
