really.. the gov't is going to stop you from smoking in your own home/ car.

I'm glad.. finally us non smokers have some rights to clean freakin air .. for years we put up with smokers crap being put in our bodies.. WHERE WAS OUR CHOICE.. when everywhere you went in public you were bound to have to breath someone elses poor habits..

Atleast now I can go out and enjoy some clean air.. just like you.. and you can enjoy that cigarette in your own space when it's not invading mine!!

And for the umpteenth time - it is an attempt at social engineering. Seems many other posters here agree with me - and disagree with you.

You have bought into the liberal mindset

Depending upon the city - it might. Some cities (Berkley) restrict smoking in your own home or car

The kids today won't mind. They've been raised to be wimps. Maybe there should be a comprehensive wimp tax to encourage parents to raise better/stronger/self-reliant kids. First we could start with a tax on every over 25 year old who still lives with mommy and daddy and isn't disabled/sick. Then we should have a soccer tax for all parents who opt for soccer because they are afraid to let their kids wrestle or play football or hockey. Let's have an extra tax on electric outlet covers. Then, let's have another tax for all parents who make their kids roller skate or ride a bike or scooter with knee pads and/or a helmet. And to make it "corporate" we could tax those leagues that give every kid a trophy so their feelings won't be hurt and tax the schools that are afraid of offending some kid so they ban green and red and change song lyrics to winter at Christmas. We could also tax teachers who are afraid to harm a kid's psyche by grading them with a red pen or parents who think little Joshua or Britney shouldn't get a part time job while they're in high school or college or think it's too hard for them to shovel snow or mow lawns to earn a little money. I also propose an extra prince/princess tax on parents who sue schools for something a teacher said to their kids that hurt their widdle feelings and I'd double the tax if the kids are in high school.

When these "kids" grow up they will be a burden on society so if the government becoming your mommy and intruding in your personal decisions is what you want, let's have tax on wimp raising and get some real money in the Treasury.

I haven't heard about own home..

I have heard of it when there is a child in the car...

And rightfully so.. it' child abuse really when a parent sits there and smokes and allows their child to breathe in their unhealthy bad habits.

It's unfortunate that some parents can't be trusted todo the right thing by their own child.. but someone's got to protect them i f their parents can't.

So, now you agree with the government telling parents how they should raise their child??? Nanny State TM

How did society survive all this time without the government involved with your day to day life?

Oh yeah - that's right - we survived very well thank you.

At least we can still smoke in our casinos - and have our Cigar Bars!

Do the bad habits include semi-literacy, petty tyranny, and overuse of internet slang?

Society, like people are always evolving or changing.. HOw did we survive..

well simply because we weren't addressing a problem or were ignoring it doesn't mean that it didn't exist or wasnt a problem.

Let's take domestic abuse as an example. We are much more aware of it today and we take steps to protect those that are abused. Does that mean we suddenly have more victims.. no.. we always had victims, we always had the problem.. the difference is that those people suffered in silence because it was the status quo back in the day was to look the other way and mind your own business. AS a result how many people could have otherwise have been saved and prevented from being abused if we had the mindset we have today on the issue back then.

Same with bike helmets, DUI laws, seat belt laws etc. Simply because we didnt' do anything about those then doesn't mean that we never should have, but rather taking steps to improve society has created more awarenes and prevented more deaths.

Now.. going to the obesity issue.. in case you haven't noticed, the problem HAS grown. WE are finding more and more young kids being diagnosed with ADULT onset diabetes or type II.. which means that we, as a society, now have a problem. AGain.. peoples poor choices.. if they only affect themselves.. so be it.. BUT when someone else's poor choices affects society as a whole.. society has a right.. and OBLIGATION as a society to FIX the issue. In this case the issue needs to be addressed on several levels... and we're seeing it more and more. For example.. just look at hte Biggest Looser on TV.. how many has that inspired? Many.. and edcucated as well. Then there's also the other little things that we can do as a society to help aid it along.. like taxing sugary drinks. .. and if we can't get people to curtail their purchasing bad for you items with that.. then atleats they would be paying something more to society to make up for their bad choices that ultimately affect us all in a negative way.

It's NOT the government that is controlling us like some robot.. IT'S SOCIETY WORKING TOGETHER .. to have an outcome that affects us all in a positive light... society adjusts to current situations, issues so that life as a whole and for us all as a society could be greatly improved.

You don't get that.. you would just rather think that there is some nazi like regime trying to make you do what you want like a bunch of drones.. sorry.. I don't buy into your conspiracy theories.. I don't buy into it not one bit.. I"m not going to sit there in a chair in my house with foil on top of my head and think that everything that happens out there is some big consipracy.. it's ridiculous and insane.

If you don't want rules, regulation and you don't want to have society improve as a whole.. then remove yourself from society and live on your own deserted island.. where you can smoke all the cigs you want (because no one will complain about them being forced to inhale your nicotine).

I think its a FABULOUS idea.. sure it was born out of the state's need to raise some dough.. but so what.. it also arises out of the need to battle how OBESE American's are becoming.

I say .. why stop there.. ALL foods that are "junk foods" should be taxed.

It solves several problems.

First.. it might curb people from spending so much thereby consuming so many fatty foods.

Second.. It helps raise revenue for tax strapped states so that they don't have to go and increase property taxes, tax on gas.. etc.

Third... it will help head American in the direction we need to go healthwise.. for I do believe that if .. I'll change that to when.. we have some sort of nationalized health system or something close to it.. the tax on the bad for you foods should eventually go toward healthcare programs.
Yeah, we need to let the government decide what kinds of foods we can eat and tax the ones that some bureaucrat thinks don't fit his ideal. Do you hear yourself?

What has happened to people being free to make their own choices? When did it become about helping to "raise revenue for tax strapped states?"

I'm not fat; I don't smoke; I don't eat fatty foods or drink sugar filled soda, but if you want to...go right ahead. It's none of my business. The difference with smoking is that I have to breath the same air as you, but you don't have to eat my food.

This country is being taken over by nanny state liberal control freaks who want to tell everyone when, where, and how they can take a **** and what kind of toilet to use. It's disgusting and has to stop.
