Demonstrations, riots and looting will break out in various sections of the country, hardest hit by the collapsing economy. The government, which in the US has a history of using draconian tactics once violence starts (or as in the case of Seattle in 1998 there was no need for violence for the police to unleash hell on peaceful demonstrators) will lead to casualties and an escalation of tensions. The US army's North America command will be called in to affect areas, forcing martial law and gun confiscations.
By late summer, early fall, the foundations of the Civilian Defense Corp will be laid down. Echos of the Waffen SS anyone?

Excuse me but lets go over that again:
1. This is a democracy. If the current Congress and President fail to perform, they can be replaced in as little as 2 years. There is never a reason for people to be in streets setting fire to and destroying the property and livlihoods of other citizens.
2. The Seattle Police treated the rioters with kid gloves. They used tear gas and drove them over the bridges and dispersed them. This after the rioters burned property, smashed windows, overturned cars, looted stores and caused injury- and as I recall one death- of innocent people. Hardly "peaceful". If I were in charge, it would go like this: I could call in 100 police officers with automatic M-16 rifles. I would then issue a warning to the rioters that they had 3 minutes to disperse and leave the area. If they failed to do so, I would order the police to open fire and keep firing until every rioter was either dead or gone from the scene. That is how I think riots should be handled. That is why I am not a cop.
3. This was published in a Russian paper. I do not recall riots in Russia or the old USSR. I do not see riots in China either despite the fact that the citizens of both nations are treated like crap. There is a reason they don't have riots in those countries- or even peaceful protest. See Tiannamon Square.

I don't think Americans have the will to riot or protest again....and if they do I think the government need not resort to violence....just give the people a good football game , an inauguration to wet their pants over or a puppy to discuss...they'll sink back into their stupor and things will be peaceful.

"In times of change, the Patriot is a scarce man; brave, hated and scorned. When his cause succeeds, however, the timid join him, for then it costs nothing to be a Patriot."
Towards the start of the article, the author thinks Russia will do fine and loses credibility. The reality is that Russia is likely to have a deficit for '09, and most economists are predicting a depression in 2009. All this after a decade of 8% per year growth.
